Motor vehicle, bike, pedestrian and water safety and fire, choking, poison and fire arm injury prevention will be coordinated by a new Risk Watch Champions team, according to Judi Hawkins, Cleveland County Safe Kids and Safe Communities co-coordinator. The program is funded by a $10,000 grant from the North Carolina Safe Kids Coalition. Lenoir and New Hanover counties were also awarded grant money. The program will use storytelling for pre- kindergartners and kindergartners. First and second graders will use a detective model. “That age children like to solve prob- lems,” Hawkins said. Third and fourth graders will use a reporting model. The program can be integrated into other parts of the overall curriculum. From there, it will be used in Cleveland County and Shelby schools. “It’s very exciting. This team concept will be great,” Hawkins said. Grover Elementary has used a version of the program for the past few years. Risk Watch attempts to create safer homes and communities.
