July 3, 2 2003 The Kings Mountain Herald Page 7A Lightning third in state tourney Kings Mountain Lightning fin- ished third in the 17-team NSA Class A 14-under State Championship fast pitch softball tournament over the weekend at Mallard Creek Park in in Charlotte. The Lightning won four straight games before losing two straight to the Denver Dazzle (7-4) and to the eventual tournament champion Blue Magic of Charlotte (5-0). Lauren Gaffney led the hitting for the Lightning with a .500 aver- age, followed by Amber Milwood 471, Brittney Thornburg .412, Jessica Yarbro .412, Kristyn Funderburke .375, Kale Buchanan .294, Morgan Childers .278 and Courtney Tate .231. Finishing third in the prestigious field was quite an accomplishment for the Lightning, which has only ten players. “All of our players will be enrolled in Kings Mountain High School next year,” noted Coach Ronny Funderburke. “We compet- ed against teams that draw from four and five counties. Most of them have tryouts. What makes this more amazing is that this little team that draws fro a 10-to-12 mile radius went up against the best teams in the state that draw play- ers from as much as a 100-mile radius.” Kings Mountain opened play on Friday with a 6-3 victory over the North Carolina Lady Cardinals from Kernersville. Kristyn Funderburke got the win with relief help over the final 12/3 innings from Morgan Childers. Gaffney led the KM plate attack with 3-for-3 and Funderburke, Childers.and Milwood had two hits each. Childers hurled a six-hitter and struck out ten in a 3-1 victory over the Carolina Thunder from Belmont. Childers, Thornburg, Milwood, Gaffney, Yarbro and Tate led the hitting with’ one hit each. The Lightning defeated the Carolina Wizards of Charlotte 11-2 Funderburke hurled the win and Milwood led the hitting with 3-for- 3. Thornburg, Gaffney, Yarbro and Tate added two hits each. Childers picked up the win as the Lightning defeated the Randolph county Knockouts 6-4. Thornburg and Tianna Whitaker collected two hits each and Buchanan, Funderburke, Childers, Milwood, Yarbro and Laura Weigel added one each. Kings Mountain went into the finals of the winners bracket unde- feated along with the Denver Dazzle. The Dazzle did a good job of holding down KM'’s hit produc- tion as only Buchanan, Funderburke, thornburg, Milwood, Gaffney and Weigel could manage one apiece. It was much the same story in the consolation finals when KM lost to the Blue Magic. Yarbro col- lected two hits and Buchanan, Funderburke and Gaffney had one each.
