| SPORTS RRR SRR The Kings Mountain Herald SRR Hollifield to coach at Shelby By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Kings Mountain’s Aubrey Hollifield has joined the football coaching staff at Shelby High School. Hollifield, who coached the past three years at A.L. Brown High in Kannapolis, will coach the defensive line and teach social studies at Shelby. Hollifield said his growing family . was the main reason he took the Shelby job. “When I left (Kings:Mountain High) three years ago my oldest son, Dax, was only six months old,” he said. “But now I have three children and they're all moving around and walking real well. The drive to Kannapolis was never that bad; the only thing bad was I thought I was missing a little bit with them.” Hollifield said he had told Shelby football coach Chris Norman of his desire to get back in the area during track season last spring. “I asked him if he heard of anything open around here to give me a call,” Hollifield said. “He called me the first of June and said he had a football spot open and asked if I'd be interested.” Hollifield accepted the job, and for most of the month of June he pulled double-duty coaching in both Kannapolis and Shelby. His last official “pay day” in Kannapolis was June 30. “I actually started in Shelby about three weeks ago,” Hollifield said. “I was going from one job to another job, actually getting in around 14 hours a day for awhile. Now I'm just in Shelby, % Hollifield joined the A.L. Brown coaching staff in 1999 when then Kings Mountain coach and athletic director Ron Massey took over that storied pro- gram. “Coach Massey was always very accommodating with everything I had to do,” Hollifield said, “but I still felt like [ was missing a little bit with my family. The drive to Shelby will be only about 13 miles as opposed to 50 miles (to Kannapolis).” While in KM and Kannapolis Hollifield served as JV basketball coach, and he has always had a desire to be a head basketball coach. His duties in Shelby will not include bas- ketball. “I'm not hired as a basketball coach, but I'd like to volunteer and help out,” he said. “Shelby doesn’t have a varsity assistant. It’s like it used to be in Kings Mountain. They have a varsity coach and a JV coach.” The toughest thing about coaching in Shelby may be going up against his alma mater. Hollifield was a three- sport athlete at KMHS in the 1980s. He was an All-State and Shrine Bowl line- backer in football and earned a full scholarship to Wake Forest University, where he played for legendary ACC coach Bill Dooley. “Going up against Kings Mountain will be really weird,” he said. “But the turnover on the coaching staff has been so much. I know a lot of the guys on staff but it’s not like I really coached with them.” KM head coach Dave Farquharson and offensive line coach Alfred Ash were the only full-time coaches on the KM staff when Hollifield was on board from 1994-99. Michael Wilbanks was a student assis- tant in 1998. “I coached Kenny Bridges,” Hollifield noted. “He was a senior my first year in Kings Mountain. It's going to be extremely weird going up against them, and it would even be worse if we had to play at Kings Mountain this year. “But this is going to be a good change for me,” he said. “I've been with Coach Massey for eight years and I've enjoyed it. But I think this is going to be a good thing. I'll get to see how things work from a different perspec- tive. Shelby has a great tradition and I've known their principal (Bernie Drake), Coach (Jim) Taylor (athletic director), Coach Norman and most of their other coaches for a long time.” CONTRIBUTED PHOTO The Reds recently won the 9-10 Kings Mountain Dixie Youth Baseball League championship with an 11-0 record.
