BRYMER Staff Writer While five of the six Kings Mountain City Council members have filed for re-election, council member Gene White is keeping mum on whether he will seek another term. “I'm waiting them out to see what happens,” he said in a telephone inter- view Monday. “I've got plenty of time The Kings Mountain Herald White mum on election plans et.” 4 The filing period closes Aug. 1. White holds one of two at large seats. Rick Moore, who holds the other seat, has filled for re-election. Houston Corn, William “Bill” Marcellino and Gary D. Joy have also filed. The race is heating up in Ward 3 where a trio of candidates are making a bid for the seat held by incumbent Clavon Kelly. Two of those candidates, Jerry Mullinax and Ralph Grindstaff, have served on the council before. Tommy Hawkins has not. In Wards 1, 2, 4 and 5 incumbents Howard Shipp, Jim Guyton, Dean Spears and Carl DeVane face no oppo- sition so far. Mayor Rick Murphrey has filed for re-election with no challengers at this time. Storm causes power outage BY ANDIE L. BRYMER Staff Writer ; A lightning storm Saturday night meant some residents lost electricity for a few hours, officials say. Lightning hit two of the city’s seven substation circuits around 9 p.m. Crews were on the job almost immedi- ately, restoring power to 95 percent of the affected customers by 2 a.m., said Andrew and Caleb Franklin, sons of Tim and Shandora Franklin, recently celebrated their birthdays. It was a pool party and the theme was Spongebob Square Pants. Andrew and Caleb are the grandsons of Oscar and Aloyse Jones and also Scott Franklin and Beth Winebarger. They did an excellent job,” Murphrey said. “I can’t say enough about them.” In addition to the lightning damage, tree limbs fell on lines in the Meadowbrook and Linwood commu- nities though no poles were broken. Murphrey credits the city’s tree trim- ming program for keeping limb dam- age to a minimum. “It was not as bad as it could have been without it (tree trimming),” he said. Unofficial reports indicate three inches of rain fell around Moss Lake in under a two hour period Saturday night. ANDIE L. A native of Kings Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Thomas “O.T.” Hayes Sr. and Ruth Eaker Hayes. He was also preceded in death by her siblings, Nell H. Teeter, Ernest Hayes, O.T.Hayes Jr., Betty H. Moss, and two sisters who died before she was born, Eunice Floyd Hayes and Ivia Lee Hayes. She graduated from Kings Mountain High School and attended Geyer Business College of Charlotte. She served as a radio operator in the United States Coast Guard during World War IL She lived in Charleston, SC for many years where she worked and retired from the South Carolina Ports Authority. In Cleveland County, she served as a magistrate for nine years and as vice-chairperson of the Kings Mountain ABC Board. She was a lifetime active member of Central United Methodist Church, Kings Mountain. She sang in the Junior and Senior Choirs, served as chairperson of the Council on Ministries, secretary to the Administration Board, treasurer of the Adult Class of United Methodist Women, food coor- dinator for bereaved families, and fulfilled her dream of set- ting up the history room at her church. She is survived by a brother, Ned Hayes and wife Doris “Mutt,” of Burlington, and a sister, JoAnne Harrison of Hollywood, SC. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Janice Combs at 2 p.m. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. TONY WILLIAMS KINGS MOUNTAIN - Tony Rogers Williams, 53, 116 Velvet Drive, died July 17, 2003 at home. A native of Pulaski County, Va, he was the son of the late Curtis Bennett Williams and Maggie Vaughn Williams. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and master electrician. He retired from Recore in 2002 as vice president. He is survived by his wife, Alene Coleman Williams of the home; stepdaughter, Terry Meeks of Kings Mountain; brothers, J.B. Williams of Pulaski, VA, Jerry L. Williams of Newport News, VA, and Curtis J. Williams of Bessemer City; sisters, Barbara Ann Larsen of Rockwood, TN, Marjorie Dodd of Gastonia, Hilda Williams of Marion, VA, Mary Y. Davis of Republic, MI, and Ester C. Rupe of Bethpage, TN; and grandchildren, Stephanie Forbes and Elizabeth Forbes of Hickory. A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Saturday at Greene’s West Chapel. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Methodist Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. Greene Funeral Service - West Chapel was in charge of arrangements. BETTY HOFFMAN GASTONIA - Betty Waters Hoffman, 65, 2602 Cove Creek Drive, died July 18, 2003 at home. A native of Macon County, she was the daughter of the late Doc and Nina Teague Waters and wife of the late Robert C. Hoffman. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jacob Waters, and nephew Darrell Waters. She graduated from Franklin High School and Evans... College of Commerce. She was a former, employee of Garland & Eck Attorneys at Law. She retired from Sara Lee in 2001 after 21 years. She was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church for the past 44 years. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Judy Hoffman of Dallas, Jack and Patricia Hoffman of Gastonia, Terry and Michelle Hoffman of Kings Mountain, Gary and Joy Hoffman of Gastonia, and Jeff Hoffman of Gastonia; sisters, Edith Beaty of Gastonia, Marie Truett of Gastonia, and Jane Pendergrass and Clara Jo Bishop of Franklin; brother, Hoover Waters of Virginia; nine grand- children and one great grandchild. The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Richard Brown at 2 p.m. Monday at Sandy Plains Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Howell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. LILLIAN MORRISON GROVER - Lillian Willis Morrison, 919 Bethlehem Church Road, died July 17, 2003 at Summit Place, Kings Mountain. She was retired from Firestone Textile Mills. She was preceded in death by her father, John Willis; mother, Jessie Mae Willis; husband, Melvin Gibbs Morrison; daughters, Edith M. Bridges and Sadie Morrison; sister, Edna Nodine; and brothers Dan, Frank and Fred Willis. She is survived by her sons, Jerry Morrison and wife Nancy of Gastonia, and Mike Morrison of Cramerton; daughter, Becky Gooch and husband Ron of Toronto, Canada; sisters, Florence White and husband Zeno of Polkville, Dot White of Shelby, and Nell Morrison of Boiling Springs; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. The funeral was conducted by Ron Gooch at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel, Shelby. Burial was in Cleveland Memorial park. Cleveland Funeral Services was in charge of arrange- ments. KMHS freshman orientation August 7 Kings Mountain High School will host freshman /new student orientation Thursday, August 7 at 6 p.m. A brief opening session is planned in the school gym fea- turing student council leaders, school officials, cheerleaders and chorale members.
