BRYMER Staff Writer Kings Mountain Hospital's physical therapy department has grown so much during the last two years that an expansion is * planned in the near future. The department sees peo- ple in its outpatient depart- ment and treats in-patients in the acute and skilled care departments. According to Randy Howe, physical therapy department director, the growth can be attributed to having a professional staff and to giving individualized care. “We give people the per- sonal, gentle touch,” he said. The five member depart- ment has expanded its out- patient hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. “We try to accommodate patients” work schedules,” Howe said. Therapists and therapy assistants also work with patients who are staying at the hospital following joint . replacement. Often these patients spend the first three to five post-operative days at the hospital where the surgery was performed. They then transfer to Kings Mountain for 10 to 15 more days. During that time, Howe and his staff strive to decrease the patients’ pain then work on strength building and increasing range of motion. “We try to make it so the problem isn’t recurrent. We want to return their quality of life and give them relative independence,” Howe said. Most of these patients are able to return home, Howe said. The staff also work with in-patients in the acute department who have had a stroke or cardiac problems. JONI D. SMITH Attorney DWI e Traffic ¢ Divorce 214 S. BRYMER/HERALD Physical therapy assistant Gale Martin helps patients regain independence and mobility. Howe likes working in the variety of settings. “The mix of all three makes it interesting to us as therapists,” he said. A board filled with car- toons and jokes greets patients as they enter the department. Many of the funnies are contributed by these same patients. “We like to keep it light and upbeat. That's a neces- sary part of rehabilitation. Laughter is part of what we do,” Howe said. Patients are referred to the department by their physi- cians. Howe and his staff first complete an evaluation and write a treatment plan. Possible treatments include massage, using heat and cold, electrical stimulation, stretching and mobilization. The goal is to improve strength, movement and conditioning. Many patients first hear about the department from family and friends. “A lot of people in the community don’t know we exist but they are finding out,” Howe said. He believes the services offered in Kings Mountain are top notch. “We compare favorably to other physical therapy facili- ties across the region,” Howe said. In addition to Howe, staff members include therapist es & Bake Sale <@ Tx EIB Bethel United Methodist Church ; El Bethel Rd., Kings Mountain Saturday, August 2nd RANDY HOWE Jennifer Cauble and assis- tants Kathie Dixon, Gale Martin and Stephanie Brown. Therapists have a masters degree and assistants hold an associate degree. Howe has'26 years. of | physical therapy experience’ including 20 years in the Air Force. He has been at Kings Mountain Hospital for two years. “I couldn't think of a bet- ter job,” he said. Preliminary plans call for remodeling the front glassed area which now houses administration into a 3,450 square foot physical therapy department. The current department is at 1,450 square feet.
