First Charter Jamboree
Friday night at Burns
Mountaineers play Freedom at 7 p.m.
By GARY STEWART
Editor of The Herald
While many area high schools
will be officially opening their
2003. football season Friday
night, Kings Mountain's
Mountaineers will be traveling
to Burns for the fifth annual First
Charter Cleveland County
Jamboree.
Four games (one an hour) are
slated beginning at 6 p.m. The
scrimmage will be under live
football conditions except on
kicks.
Shelby will face Hickory in the
6 p.m. opener, followed by
Kings Mountain-Freedom, Crest-
East Rutherford, and Burns-
Chase.
Kings Mountain Coach David
Farquharson said the
Mountaineers will treat the
scrimmage just like a regular
football game.
“We're going to take this week
and kind of treat it like a prac-
~ tice week and get our kids used
to game preparation,” he said.
“We're going to watch last
year’s film. We're going to start
working toward a scenario that
we would do to get ready for an
opponent. We're going to work
up a scout report, and work up
our offensive plan based on the
defenses we're going to see.”
The Mountaineers saw their
first scrimmage competition last
Saturday in a multi-team event
at Hunter Huss High in
Gastonia. The Mountaineers bat-
. tled East Lincoln, East Burke, *''*
East Mecklenburg and Huss in”
alternating 12-play scrimmage
situations and finished with a
live scrimmage against the
Huskies.
Farquharson was pleased with
what he saw, but also saw room
for improvement.
“It was a good day for us,” he
said. “We got the best out of the
scrimmage based on the format.
“Coming out of a scrimmage
you always find some things
you have to work on,” he added.
“Conditioning is going to be
one. We were in pretty good
shape and the kids were brag-
ging about playing both ways,
. but after the fourth scrimmage
they were really needing a
break.”
Kings Mountain has a wealth
of experience on the offensive
line and in all defensive posi-
tions, but an entirely new look
in the offensive backfield.
“We got a good look offensive-
ly,” Farquharson said. “Montrell
(Banks) and the running backs
got some good work in and the
defense got a lot of good work
in as far as making adjustments
