August 21, 2003 CEG ROR CHURCH BRIEFS Benefit slated for Billy Biggers There will be a benefit breakfast and bake sale for heart transplant patient Randy “Billy” Biggers Saturday, September 6 from 6-10 a.m. at El Bethel United Methodist Church, Kings Mountain. The event is sponsored by Christian Freedom Baptist Church and El Bethel United Methodist Church. All proceeds will go to help with Biggers’ medical expenses. Movie August 24 at E. Gold Wesleyan East Gold Street Wesleyan Church, Kings Mountain, will show the movie “The Climb” at 6 p.m. Sunday, August 24 in the family life center. “The Climb” is a World Wide Pictures production and is family-friendly. The public is invited. Homecoming set at Victory Baptist Victory Baptist Church, 106 Battleground Avenue, Grover, will have its annual homecoming Sunday, August 24. Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m., followed by wor- ship at 11 a.m. A covered dish meal will be served following the worship service. All mem- bers, former members and the public are invited. Concert to raise money for trip Several musical groups will hold a benefit concert Saturday from 5-8 p.m. at Zoar Baptist Church in Shelby to help raise money for part of a mission group traveling to Migori, Kenya. Wade Wallace, soloist, pastor of Green Bethel Baptist Church and chaplain at Cleveland Regional Medical Center; Heaven's Gold Ladies ensemble directed by Marelena Gold, minster of music at Zoar Baptist; the Rev. David Costner, soloist and associate pastor of Zoar Baptist Church; and the Zoar Baptist contemporary praise band. Missions group members benefitting from the concert are Dr. Marvin Gobble, pas- tor of Zoar, and Rickie Bradley, a member of Zoar and divinity student at Gardner-Webb University. They will join Angie Barrett of the Dover YMCA and the Revs. Clinton Feemster and Lamont Littlejohn, both of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, on the trip to Kenya. The group will join four others from South Africa in Nairobi, comprising an international mutli-ethnic team totaling nine members. Laci Peterson, a GWU grad- uate who is working for two years at Table View Baptist Church in Capetown, South Africa, will be one of those joining the team from South Africa. The team will minis- ter in three orphanages, pro- vide Vacation Bible School in two Masalii village churches, and Dr. Gobble and Rev. Feemster will teach in the pastor’s school in Migori. This is Feemster’s second trip to Kenya and Gobble’s fourth. Dr. Gobble explained, “The purpose of the trip is primarily to help the chil- dren. Forty percent of the population there is HIV pos- itive and many parents die young, leaving children with no one to care for them. They were married August 21, 1938 by Judge Roy Cobb at his home in Gaffney, S.C. They have 4 daughters: Arlene, Brenda, Diane and Kay; 11 grand children; 22 great grand children; 1 great great grandchild and 3 great great grand children on the way. Nelson is a retired carpenter and farmer. He still loves to plant his own garden. People from all over Kings Mountain come to get produce from him. Lela is a housewife. She loves to can and freeze produce from their garden. They will celebrate with their family at Crystal Sea in Blacksburg. ETTA GILLILAND KINGS MOUNTAIN - Etta Bell Bennett Gilliland, of White Oak Manor, died August 13, 2003 at Kings Mountain Hospital. She was the daugh- ter of the late Dave and Ollie Lovelace * Bell. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Clyde T. Bennett Sr. and Henry R. Gilliland. She was a charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. She is survived by two sons, Clyde T. Bennett Jr. and wife Marlene, and John D. Bennett; granddaughter Kimberly Bennett Reeves and husband Randy; and great grandson, Jonathan Trent Reeves, all of Kings Mountain. GOSSETT TAMPA, FL - Phyllis Sharp Gossett, 64, of Lutz, FL died August 8, 2003. A native of Racine, WI, she was the daughter of Letha Sharp and the late Robert Sharp. She was an active member of Eastern Star and Ranch Hands Sertoma Club where she was treasurer for many years. She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Fred P. Gossett of the home; daugh- ter, Phyllis G. Patterson and granddaughter Jessica L. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daugh- ter of the late Lawson Harold and Lela Frances Goforth Dover. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Harold Dover and Paul Dover, and two sisters, Frances D. Thornburg and Jessie Faye Byars. She was a retired sales person for Belk Department Stores, and was a Lutheran. She is survived by her husband, Jack J. HAZEL FRYER KINGS MOUNTAIN - Hazel Herndon Fryer, 89, Carolina Village, Hendersonville, formerly of Kings Mountain died August 16, 2003 at Carolinas Village. A native of Kings Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Marion Elmer Herndon and Lula Carpenter Herndon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank '"" Milton Fryer, and’ daughter, Jan Marion Fryer. Although she lived most of her life in Southeastern cities, she returned to Kings Mountain when her hus- band retired. She was librar- ian for nine years at Mauney Memorial Library. She was also a member and first President of the Kings Mountain Historical Museum Commission and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. In Hendersonville, where she retired, she was a mem- ber of Seasoned Poets of The Blue Ridge. Her four pub- lished books of poetry were donated to the Kings Mountain Historical Museum book store. During World War II, she served with the American Red Cross in England and Germany. She is survived by her son, Gregory Milton Fryer of Simpsonville, SC; daughter, Phyllis Fryer Brown of Virginia Beach, Va; grand- ‘children, Cheryl Holmes and husband Jeff of Laurens, SC, Carrie Tankersly and husband Jeff of Shelby, Brodie Brown of Virginia Beach, Va, and Chad Brown of Duncan, SC; and great- - grandchildren Jackson Holmes and Christian Brown. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Raymond Percival Anderson Cover Jr., 74, 902 Lee Street, died August 17, 2003 at his residence. A native of Manhattan, NY, he was the son of the late Raymond P.A. Cover Sr. and Grace Helen Reinecke Cover. He was a retired Mechanical Engineer and Consultant and was an instructor and driver at Lime Rock and Thompson. He was a race car driver during the 1950's and 1960's, racing at Connecticut Raceways. He served in the United States Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Bolin Cover of Kings Mountain; son John R. Cover and wife Becky L. of Venice, FL; daughters Carol Jean Cover and Patricia A. Cover Barnes, both of Whittier, NC; sister, Mrs. James Baker of Corpus Christie, TX; five nieces and nephews; special friends Cesar and Lorene Garcia of Mexico City, Mexico; and six grandchildren. DOC SPENCER DALLAS - Doctor Knox “Doc” Spencer, 69, 107 Betty Jean Drive, died August 17, 2003 at Century Care of Cherryville. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Knox and Mary Bell Spencer. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Barbara Hance Spencer of the home; chil- dren and spouses, Sheila Chapman and Dave of Las Vegas, NV, Cindy Whisnant and Bobby, Loy Spencer and Brandy, all of Bessemer City, Ricky Spencer of Gastonia, Sandra Morrison and Jimmy of Shelby, Michael Harris and Patsy, Richard Hoefner and Sandra, Adona Blackwell and Jeff, Sandy Ertzberger and Marcel and Diane Wery and Scott, all of Dallas; aunts, Ethel Guiton of Kings Mountain and Lillian Liggon of Blacksburg, SC and special “guardian aunt,” Beatrice Wright of Kings Mountain; 25 grand- children and 15 great grand- children. PLATO BIDDIX SHELBY - Plato Durham “Bud” Biddix, 93, 121 Black Hawk Dr., died August 14 at Cleveland Regional. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Jessie S. and Sarah Padgette Biddix. He was retired from Dover Corp. He was a member of Dover Baptist Church where he was active in Sunday School training union and served as a Deacon, assistant director of the Young Adult Dept., a member of the Baptist Brotherhood and teacher of the John R. Dover Class. He was a graduate of Shelby High School and Gardner- Webb College’s Church- Community College class in Bible. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 202 and a 25-year member of the Eastern Star. He was an Air-Raid Warden during WWII and a longtime mem- ber of the Cleveland County Sheriff's Dept. He was active in sports, especially baseball, in which he coached semi- pro teams. He was active in Boy Scouts as assistant scout master of both the Dover and Shelby troops, taking both to the first National Jamboree in Washington, DC in 1937. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters, Lille Turner of Cherryville, Jean Mitchem of Rock Hill, SC, and Cora Bumgartner Eledge, Nell Biddix, Lola Biddix and Ann Weaver, all of Shelby. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Ellen Whitaker Biddix; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral was conduct- ed by the Revs. John Garner and B. Ervin Price at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dover Baptist Church. Members of the John R. Dover Bible Class served as honorary pallbear- ers. Burial was in Cleveland Memorial Park.
