SPORTS F The Kings Mountain Herald GARY S (5% it South Point's Joe Brown (31) rambles for yardage in Friday's 49-0 win over Kings Mountain at Gamble Stadium. Raiders roll Mounties 49-0 By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald South Point's Red Raiders scored on four of their five first half possessions - including three times from the air - to roll over Kings Mountain 49-0 in a non-con- ference football game Friday night at KM'’s John Gamble Stadium. It was the first win of the season for the Big Red Machine, which had dropped a thrilling 28-21 decision to South Carolina 5A power Northwestern the week before, It was the second straight defeat for the Mountaineers, who fell in their opener 28-6 to East Gaston's Warriors. South Point went almost immediately to the air as Kings Mountain’s defense came out geared to stop the Raiders’ powerful triple- option running attack. The Raiders marched 66 yards on the opening drive of the night and took a 7-0 lead on a 44-yard pass from Javar Williams to Ivey Watson. For the night, Williams, a talented four-year starter, hit on 7-of-11 passes for 177 yards. In their first two games, the Mountaineer pass defense has been rid- dled for 23-of-31 passes for 499 yards and seven touch- downs. South Point Coach John Devine said the Raiders noticed from the start of the game that the Kings Mountain corners were pinching and they decided to “make them pay for” it by throwing the ball. Kings Mountain coach Dave Farquharson said the Mountaineers had to pre- pare to stop the triple- option which has been so effective in the past for the Red Raiders. “When you're facing an opposing that that has been their strong suit for so long, you have to prepare for the option,” he said. “You have to be able to stop the three aspects of the option - the fullback, quarterback and pitch man - and when you set out to do that they're going to come back and throw play action and other things that they've worked on to face people that are going to stop the run,” he said. The Mountaineers were able to hold the Raiders to three-and-out on their sec- ond offensive series, but the Raiders then rolled for touchdowns on three straight possessions to take a 28-0 halftime lead. Fullback Joe Brown, who led the Raiders in rushing with 89 yards in 11 caries, capped a 65-yard drive by scoring from a yard out with 10:32 to play in the sec- ond quarter to put the Raiders on top 14-0. On the first play following a Kings Mountain punt, Williams found a streaking Tyler Gorton down the right sidelines for a 47-yard touchdown pass and with just 40 seconds left in the pass Williams hit Wade Harris with a 14-yard scor ing strike to cap a 72-yard drive. The Jaguars, who were idle last week, have to date posted lop-sided victories over South Mecklenburg and Berry Academy. Even though the Mountaineers have been blown out in their first two games by East Gaston and South Point, if this is a typi- cal Forestview-KM game it will go down to the wire. Since 1999, Forestview’s first year of existence, this game has been decided by a touchdown or less. KM rebound- ed to win the next two, but Forestview won last year’s game 21-14. Forestview is coming off its worst season (6-6) since its inception, but in their first two games they showed the offensive prowess that could put them right in the thick of the battle for the Big South 3A title. “Forestview is pretty much like South Point,” says KM Coach David Farquharson. “Scott Lee (Forestview’s head coach) was over there at South Point and they've put in that same Georgia Southern See Forestview, 3B So SEDONA Auto, AC, 7 Passenger, CD, PW, PL rer ; SPECTRA Equipped Not Stripped!
