CERES The Kings Mountain Herald GARY STEWART / HERALD Kings Mountain running back Sidney Goode (24) tries to keep his balance as he goes through the line against South Point in Friday's football game at John Gamble Stadium. South Point won 49-0. RAIDERS From 1A Meanwhile, the South Point defense was all over Kings Mountain's Pro-I attack. The Mountaineers managed only two first downs in the first half (and three for the game). The Mountaineers fumbled the second half kickoff at their own 22 yard line, and following a holding penalty the Raiders marched 32 yards in just three plays with Williams keeping the ball around left end on an option play for a 35-0 lead. After that the Raiders turned the game over to their second unit which scored touchdowns on a 68-yard run by Josh Robinson and a 37-yard keeper by reserve quarterback Corey Brown. For the game the Raiders ran up 522 yards of total offense (345 on the ground and 177 in the air) to just 63 for the Mounties (all on the ground). Even though the Raiders are one of the most talented teams in North Carolina and were expected to win heavily, Farquharson said he wasn’t pleased with his team’s per- formance. “We could have played better,” he said. “I think we came out flat. For whatever reason I don’t think we got after it as well as we could have. “We didn’t come out to do anything fancy,” he added. “We worked on a good package as far as run and play action but we just didn’t execute. We didn’t have the same GARY STEWART / HERALD Kings Mountain linebacker Orlando Curry gets a breather on the sidelines during Friday's hot and humid battle with South little bit of fire that we had against East Gaston and that’s something we're going to have to address. “But I'look for South Point to do some good things at the end of the season. They're a good, well-tuned football team.” FORESTVIEW From 1B offense. “Their fullback (Brian Phillips, 5-10, 215 pounds) and their quarterback (Ben Riddle, 6-1, 175 pounds) do a good job,” Farquharson noted. “Again it’s going to mean coming in and taking care of those option respon- sibilities of the quarterback and fullback.” The Jaguars have an expe- rienced offensive line, led by Nick Riddle (6-2, 192 pounds), ©.]. Hatten (5-10, 235 pounds), Chris Null (6- 0, 212 pounds) and Josh Bell (6-0, 233 pounds). The Jaguars return their top rushers from a year ago, J.R. Armstrong and Phillips. Each gained over 800 yards rushing. Jay Carroll was a top reserve last year and has moved into the starting wingback slot. Defensively, the Jaguars return three starting line- backers (Nick Riddle, O.]. Hatten and Justin Mack) but other defensive positions are Iready low oF Oe eason rates! Farquharson expects the game to be closely contest- ed, just like the prior KM- Forestview match-ups. “They're a good football team,” he says. “They've played two games already and they’ve got a lot of con- fidence coming off those games that were pretty much blow-outs. I look for them to be fired up. They're going to be at home, but our kids have always gotten up for Forestview and I think they'll be ready to play this week. “We've still got some kids that have to be able to come in and give us some quality time as back-ups for our starters that are going both ways, so we can keep some fresh legs on the field,” he added. “We're going to have to come in and be a little bit more disciplined offensively, to make the right call at the line of scrimmage and move the football.” Kings Mountain will be playing without the services of two-year starting corner- back Grayling Elliott, who suffered a fractured vertebrae in his neck during the East Gaston game and will proba- bly be out the rest of the year. “That's going to be some hard shoes to fill,” Farquharson said. “He was one of our team captains and had been an offensive and defensive starter for two years on varsity. I hate to see that happen to him after al the hard work and dedication he’s given us. He's been there every day during the summer and spring workouts. He's just a super kid and it’s going to be hard to fill his shoes.” Otherwise, Farquharson said, the Mountaineers are in good shape physically ELLIOTT and should be ready to play.
