Girls were scored on won-loss record, sportsman- ship and individual skills. They competed against over 70 teams ranging in age from U16 to U8 for boys, girls and co-ed teams. Megan Eaker won the skills competition for the team. Team members are back row, Sarah Blackburn, Angela Walters, Amber Hyder, Megan Eaker, Cheynne Hale, Kalie Deaton and Coach Toby Deaton. M—— ’ ni TET Chil ders hurls two no-hitters Morgan Childers pitched two no-hitters for the Kings Mountain Lightning in the Back to School Softball Tournament last weekend in Marion. Childers’ first gem came in the opening round when Kings Mountain blanked the Black Mountain Blue Blaze 10-0. She walked only one batter and struck out nine. In a quarter-finals game Sunday, Childers came with- in one out of throwing a perfect game but issued a walk. She struck out 12 as KM won 4-0 over the Mixed Forces of Asheville. Natalyn Blanton collected three hits and Jessica Yarbro added two in the win over the Blue Blaze. Kristyn Funderburke had two hits and Amber Milwood, Kala Buchanan, Brittney Thornburg and Yarbro added one each against the Mixed Forces. Kings Mountain finished in second place with a 5-2 record. KM is a 14-under team but played in the 16- under division. Both of KM’s losses were to the champion East Tennessee Mustangs. The first loss came in the second round 8-0. Thornburg led the KM hitting with 2-for-2. The second loss came in the championship game, 2-1. Funderburke, Childers, Thornburg, Buchanan, Blanton and Courtney Tate had one hit each. Kings Mountain's other wins were over Charlotte Purple Craze 6-0, the Blue Blaze 4-1, and the Spartanburg Carolina Thunder 4-2. Childers struck out 10 in the win over the Purple Craze. Buchanan, Thornburg and Yarbro had two hits each and Funderburke, Childers, Blanton, Milwood and Tate added one each, Funderburke pitched a three-hitter and struck out five in the win over the Blue Blaze. Blanton had two hits and Yarbro, Funderburke, Thornburg, Tate and Laura Weigel added one each. Funderburke pitched 6 1/3 innings and Childers pitched the final two innings as KM edged Spartanburg. Funderburke led the hitting with two hits and Buchanan, Milwood and Lauren Gaffney added one each. For the tournament, Thornburg led the hitting with a .474 average, fol- lowed by Funderburke .364, Blanton .350, yarbro .318 and Buchanan .316. Kings Mountain's overall record is 24-14.
