BRYMER Staff Writer Disadvantaged children have a new advocate - the Kings Mountain Junior Women’s Club. The organization formed earlier this year and has made children its focus. Club mem- bers met with guidance counselors Thursday to distribute boxes containing socks, underwear and tee shirts. The club held a consignment sale in March to raise funds for the project. Saralee Intimate Apparel and Wal-Mart also con- tributed. Project coordinator Estelle Grabert told the guidance counselors that it wasn’t until her children started school that she saw the needs. “I didn’t realize what kids who come to school with my children have to face.” Club members hope to expand the project to include the intermediate, middle and high schools. “As children get older, the issues become more challenging,” Grabert told counselors. “As you see other needs and once the pro- gram is in place, we hope to address those needs.” Guidance counselors say the underwear will enable children to stay at school after an accident. Before, parents sometimes had to take time from work to take their child home to change clothes. Mary Accor, Kings Mountain District Schools director of administrative services, praised the program. “This is what we need, schools helping the community and the community helping the schools.” al Page 7A ANDIE BRYMER / HERALD Estelle Grabert (right) hands Janet Suber, Bethware Elementary guidance counselor, a box of clothing for students.
