Lillian Henderson celebrated her 90th birthday July 2 and
was honored at a reception at the Christian Ministry Center,
First Baptist Church, Kings Mountain.
Her six grandchildren and spouses - Rance and Betty
Henderson, Pat Tart, Bill and Kay Davis, Ed and Phyllis
Campbell, Steve and Mary Henderson, and Jerry and Vivian
Rikard - joined her in greeting the 200-plus guests who
attended, expressing loving birthday wishes.
Her invitations included Scripture and Proverbs, “..thank-
ing God for her..” and hand painted plates bearing this
inscription were displayed throughout the Center.
Fresh flower arrangements were used, many of which had
been received in her honor.
Her tiered birthday cake was beautifully designed using
favorite flowers and colors. Displayed alongside the cake
were portraits of her and her late husband, Ray Henderson,
in their early marriage.
Guests joined in singing “Happy Birthday” and “You Are
My Sunshine,” Mike Sisk accompanied the group singing
and provided music during the reception. Her grandchildren
assisted in serving. :
A lifelong resident of Kings Mountain, she resides at 907
Church Street. She is the grandmother to 18 and has 31 great
and three great-great grandchildren.

Fund drive for cancer patient

Cleveland County folks are rallying
around Cathi Bales, a 21-year-old
woman with malignant melanoma.
Bales, who now lives in Florida,
grew up in this area. Local residents
may remember her mother Gwen
Wilson who worked as a registered
nurse in the intensive care unit of
Cleveland Regional Hospital.
Doctors say the cancer was caused
by a cigarette burn Bales received three
years ago. The burn failed to heal. In
March, Bales sought medical attention
and was diagnosed with stage II skin
cancer. A 14 inch growth was removed

of the few Loyalist contin-
gent to encamp at the battle-
field known as the “turning
Point of the American
Revolution in the South.”

meet the demands of the
Seven Years War, but was
soon disbanded after that
conflict. Most men elected to
remain in the colonies

other lymph nodes. There is an inoper-
able tumor on the liver. The cancer is
not at stage IV. Doctors also have dis-
covered bleeding lesions in her lungs.
Bales was recently hospitalized with a
staph infection and a similar infection
Experts say this form of cancer is one
of the fastest, most aggressive kinds.
They are treating Bales with several
medications. She takes 28 pills daily
though chemotherapy has been

Amvets Post 995 in Kings Mountain.
Wanda Rowell, a family friend,

Rowell is now in Florida helping
care for Bales so her mother may con-
tinue working.
“It’s really hit me hard,” Rowell said.

Peoples Baptist plans revival
The Peoples Baptist Church of Kings Mountain will hold
its annual revival beginning Sunday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m.
