asm i 1 The Kings Mountain Herald —— Kings Mountain fullback J.J. McClain (44) finds going tough up middle against Shelby defense. Shelby hands Bepiamber ; 18, 2003 KM opens SWFH play at Foard By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Kings Mountain has never lost a football game to Fred T. Foard. In fact, in all previous meetings the Mountaineers won by lop-sided margins. Even though the Mountaineers will be favored when the two teams open their Southwestern Foothills 3A schedule Friday night in Newton, KM Coach Dave Farquharson is warning his players not to take a win for granted. “They have a riew lease on life,” have a new coach and they're doing some things new and trying to get their program going in the right direction.” Kings Mountain appears to be improving, too, since a pair of lop-sided losses to open the season (to East Gaston See Foard, 5B says Farquharson. “They Shop On-Line 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week @ www. The victory improved the Lions’ early-season record to 2-2 heading into their first Midwest 2A Conference "» game Friday against Chase. The Mountaineers dropped to 0-4 heading into their Southwestern Foothills 3A Conference opener Friday at Fred T. Foard. The quick start by Shelby - much like East Gaston and South Point in previous lop- sided losses - was some- thing the Mountaineer coaching staff hoped to pre- vent. “I was disappointed with how we came out in the first half,” said Coach Dave Farquharson. “That's some- ‘thing we had addressed since the beginning of the season. We've worked on it and we've tried a bunch of different strategies to be improved and excited in the first half, but again we were flat and kind of lackluster and didn’t get after it, and gave a good football team a lead that we're going to ‘have a hard time coming back from.” After the Lions’ defense ‘held the Mountaineers to ‘three and out on the open- ing kickoff, the Lions launched a 75-yard touch- down drive which ended ‘with a six-yard touchdown made the score 7-0. Moments later the Lions recovered a blocked punt at the KM 13-yard line, and three plays later Jones cracked the middle of the line for a three-yard touch- down run and a 14-0 Shelby lead. After another three-and- out, the Lions drove to the Mountaineer 15 before two costly penalties pushed them back to the 23 with a fourth and 18. Ingle drilled + a 37-yard field goal to make the score 17-0. At that point the Mountaineers had not had a first down. But they began to find a measure of success on offense as J.J. McClain and Sidney Goode finally found some running room to pick up back-to-back first downs, and then quarterback Montrell Banks hit tight end Derek Hilley on a 12-yard pass to put the Mountaineers on the Shelby . 20. Shelbys defense tight- ened to force fourth and 15, but KM'’s Will Franks was true on a 37-yard field goal to put the Mounties on the board with 5:47 left in the half. Things looked good for the Mountaineers when Wesley Dixon and Aaron Bolton sacked Shelby quar- terback Keith Brooks to force a third and 12, but Brooks hit Marquis Cannon on a slant across the middle for a first down at the Mountaineer 46, and then scrambled away from a heavy Mountaineer rush to See Shelby, 5B 4 Hours a Day, HE @ www.rogerskia.com © Days a Wee 4 Hours a Day, TET @ www.rogerskia.com ° Days a Wee 4 Hours a Day, GR ENT) Come test drive any vehicle & register to win a new Harley! : Be sure to LCD A a NTU 30.
