Shelby won 40-20, Shelby JVs hand Mounties first loss By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Shelby’s JV Lions roared into Kings Mountain's John Gamble Stadium Thursday night and handed the Mountaineers their first loss of the season, 40-20. Kings Mountain, 3-1, tries to bounce back tonight at 7 o'clock when they host their first Southwestern Foothills Conference rival Fred T. Foard. After an early 7-7 tie the Lions built a 34-14 halftime lead. - Shelby’s defense set the stage for the rout, forcing a fumble at the KM 24-yard line on the Mountaineers’ first possession. After KM linebacker Marquiz Norris sacked Lion quarterback Darryl Montgomery on first ‘down, Montgomery hit ‘Antonio Odom on a 34-yard touchdown play. Taylor ‘Rabb added the point-after. The Mountaineers came right back to tie the score when Antwan Ross swept left end for a 59-yard touch- down run with 4:10 left in the first quarter. Derrick Marble added the point- after. : The Lions drove the ensu- ing kickoff 59 yards to take a 13-7 lead, and stayed out front the rest of the game. Big tight end Travis Little caught a short pass and turned it into a 33-yard scor- ing play. : The Lions went up 21-7. with 7:09 to play in the half when fullback Arseno Parks scored from nine yards out. The play was set up by a 45- yard pass to Odom. Sherod Thurman caught a pass for the two-point conversion. :: Kings Mountain's Antwan Ross swept left end for a 50- yard touchdown run, and Marable added the point- after to cut the Shelby lead to 21-14. Shelby’s Ed Gullatte intercepted a fourth down pass in the end zone and returned it to the five yard line. Shelby almost drove the - length of the field but lost the ball on downs at the KM nine-yard line. On the Mountaineers’ first play from scrimmage, though, they fumbled and Shelby’s Travis Little caught the jug- gled ball in the air and raced into the end zone to make the score 41-14.
