A native of Cleveland County, she was the wife of the late John Martin Jr. and daughter of the late Elzie Lee and Della Borders Beam. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Myra Sue Beam. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Blacksburg. She and her husband were owners of Martin's Bantam Chef in Blacksburg for 30 years. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and Upstate Carolina Medical Center. She was a Blacksburg City Councilwoman from 1983-1987. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Janie M. and Vance Wilder of Gastonia and Joyce M. and Dickie Moorhead of Blacksburg; brothers Charles Beam, Carlton Beam, David Beam and Mike Beam, all of Shelby; sisters Louise B. McKee of Durham, Vernell B. Jones of Kings Mountain, and Cora B. Shinn of Salisbury; grandchildren Travis and Nell Wilder of Charlotte, David and Emily Wilder of Durham, Richard Moorhead of Blacksburg, and Patrick and Angela Moorhead of Blacksburg; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral was conducted at the grave- side by the Revs. Ken Reid and Tim Beam at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain View Cemetery. A native of Hamtramack, MI, she was the daughter of the late Charlotte and John Matkowski. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Renee, and aunt Irene Conrad and her husband Edward. Prior to moving to Shelby, she worked for many years at Champion Spark Club and Woodall Company in the Detroit area. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Lawrence Mierka; daughters Deborah Bilow and husband Eric of Shelby, Kim Mierka Marcum and husband Bill of Ann Arbor, MJ; sisters Christine Kitchen and husband Elwyn of Pawleys Island, SC, Geri Pastewiki and husband Robert of Shelby Township, MI; brothers Eugene Matkowski and wife Geraldine of Walled Lake, MI, Richard Matkowski and wife Betty of Schaumburg, IL; granddaughters, Cristi Bostic and husband Jeff of Kings Mountain, Jill Clemmer and husband Craig of Raleigh; great-granddaughters Morgan and Taylor Bostic; nieces and nephews. She is survived by her husband, Ray T. Terry of Mooresboro; son Johnny D. Terry of Grover; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and James L. Dover of Shelby; brothers and sis- ters-in-law, J.B. and Delorese Philbeck, and Billy and Jean Philbeck, all of Shelby; grand- son Brandon D. DOROTHY COOK BESSEMER CITY - Dorothy Ann Capps Cook, 66, 751 Capps Drive, died September 9, 2003 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Wallace Eugene and Callie Mae Bell Capps. She was also preced- ed in death by her daughter, Loris Cassandra Cook; three brothers and four sis- ters. She is survived by her husband of 48: years, Gene Cook of the home; children, David Cook and wife Betsy, Odis Cook, and Callie Hovis, all of Bessemer City, and Karen Russell and husband George of Gastonia; brother Gene Capps of Lowell; sis- ter Ruth Burton of Kings Mountain; grand- children Steve Russell, Shannon Ledford, Beverly Price, Andrea Russell, Amanda Cook, Julie Cook, Jennifer Cook, Brandy Cable and Eric Massie, Chasity Patterson and Sarah Russell; and seven great-grand- children. Greene Funeral Service, West Chapel was in charge of arrangements. REV. JAMES SKIPPER RANLO - Rev. James Franklin Skipper, 70, 2497 E. Spencer Ave., died September 15, 2003 at Gaston Memorial Hospital. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Daisy Bridges Skipper. He was called into the ministry at age 15 and served in that capacity until his death. He was founder of Ranlo Free Will Baptist Church and served as pastor of Ridgeview and South Point Free Will Baptist churches, and was current pastor of Lake Road Free Will Baptist Church in Charlotte. He was a member of the Association of the Original Free Will Baptist of North Carolina. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Thelma Helton Skipper; son and daughter- in-law, James Stephen and Martha Skipper of Ranlo; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Mike Godfrey of Gastonia; brothers Robert and Donnie Skipper of Gastonia; grandchildren Stephanie and Christopher Skipper and Jamie and Cassie Godfrey; and great-granddaughter Madision Godfrey. He was preceded in death by brothers Charles, Junior and Bobbie Skipper. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. O'Dell Cook and Ted Dixon at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sharon Free Will Baptist Church.
