Crow tests
A crow found in Boiling Springs test-
ed positive for West Nile Virus,
Cleveland County Health Director
Denese R. Stallings announced last
week.
The crow was found in North
College Manor. This is the third con-
firmed case in the county this year.
Stallings urges residents to follow
public health warnings issued in June.
Officials urge avoiding contact with
mosquitoes. Insect repellents contain-
ing DEET are the most effective.
Wearing light colored, long sleeved
tops and long pants, avoiding mosqui-
to infected areas and staying indoors at
dawn and dusk also help.
Adults should use repellents with 35
percent DEET, the Centers for Disease
Control recommends. The American
positive for West Nile
Academy of Pediatrics recommends
products with 10 percent or less DEET
for children.
DEET products should not be used
on infants.
Apply repellent to exposed skin and
clothes. Do not apply on child's hands
nor near mouth, nose or eyes.
Wash after coming indoors.
If bitten by an infected mosquito, it
may take up to 3 to 12 days to become
ill. Most people who are infected with
West Nile Virus suffer no symptoms at
all. West Nile Virus may cause
headache, fever, swollen glands, mus-
cle aches and often a rash. In severe
cases, it may cause an infection of the
brain called encephalitis.
People age 50 and over and those
with health problems are at most risk
for a serious illness due to West Nile
Virus. Anyone who may be ill with
West Nile Virus should see a doctor as
soon as possible.
To stop mosquito breeding: Empty,
destroy, recycle or cover containers like
tires, tin cans, buckets and bottles
where mosquitoes can lay eggs.
Change water in pet bowls and bird
baths at least weekly. Remove or
empty dishes under potted plants.
Stocks ponds with fish. Cover unused
pools. Clean clogged rain gutters. Place
“donuts” made with mosquito-killing
bacteria in water where mosquitoes
eggs may hatch.
Anyone finding a dead crow, blue
jay, cardinal or bird of prey should call
the Cleveland County Animal Control
Department at 704-481-9884.
