Students
create
mural
for fair
BY ANDIE L. BRYMER
Staff Writer
A mural by West
Elementary School students
will be on display at the
Cleveland County Fair
which starts today.
Students in kindergarten
through fourth grade and a
few students who are now
at the intermediate school
painted the mural. Artists
from the intermediate
school include Xavier
Jarrett, Allison Wellmon,
Casey Batchelor and
Nicholas Jackson.
The mural is so large, 9
by 12 feet, that the entire
work will not be shown at
the fair. It depicts children
from various ethnic back-
grounds holding hands.
There is a city skyline in the
background along with an
ocean. Other elements
include a baseball bat, fire-
works, American flag and a
- car painted red, white and
bbe? Hat
“It’s a lot of symbolism
chosen by the students,”
explains art teacher Elisa
Freire.
Work on the mural began
last spring as the war in
Iraq started. The students
used the mural as a vehicle
for expressing their feelings
and questions about the
war, according to Freire.
Third and fourth graders
worked on the actual
sketching while kindergart-
ners and first graders paint-
ed the background. The sec-
ond grade painted a gloss
over the mural.
After the fair, the mural
will be on display at the
West Elementary stage.
Later in the fall, it will be
on display at the Mauney
Memorial Library. Work by
art students from West,
North and East elementary
schools will be on display
as well. Some of their art
will be for sale. A portion of
the proceeds will benefit the
library’s summer reading
program. Members of the
art honors club will be dis-
playing their work as well.
“It (the mural) is a tribute
to Ms. Kiser, the dedicated
students at West and future
students,” Freire said.
Kiser, a guidance coun-
selor, wrote a grant for
mural supplies to the
Cleveland County Arts
Council.
