Foard. GOODE TIMES Sophomore running back sains 211 yards, scores four TDs in 44-12 Mountaineer win By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald A quick start and a concentrated effort for four quarters made the difference for Kings Mountain's Mountaineers Friday in Newton as they rolled to a 44-12 victory over Fred T. Foard in their Southwestern Foothills 3A Conference opener. After four losses to tough non- conference competition, the Mountaineers came out motivated and ready to turn their fortunes around. : Kings Mountain rolled to a 28-6 halftime lead and scored at least one touchdown in each of the four quarters. Fred T. Foard, which fell to its fourth straight loss after an opening season win over 2A West Lincoln, tried to establish a passing game but Kings Mountain's blitzing defense wouldn't allow it to be effective. Even though quarterback Samy Shreitah, who had passed for 796 yards in the Tigers’ first four games, hit on 16-of-25 for 119 yards most of his damage came in the middle of the field. Foard managed only a pair of first half field goals and a short second half touchdown drive following a KM turnover. The big story of the game offen- sively for Kings Mountain was the strong 1-2 running punch of sopho- mores Sidney Goode and J.J. McClain, Goode, the tailback in KM’s Pro I, had a career high 211 yards on 17 carries and scored four of the six KM touchdowns. Even though he didn’t score, McClain had 17 carries for 86 yards and did another outstanding job of blocking for Goode. Quarterback Montrell Banks added 84 yards in five car- ries as the Mountaineers rolled to 426 yards rushing and 448 yards total offense. “I thought we came out and played with a little bit more intensi- ty and played with a little bit more sense of urgency,” said KM Coach David Farquharson. “We executed well, and for the most part I was pleased that we put together four quarters of football. We came out and looked a little rough at the start of the second half, but we settled down and played well.” Kings Mountain fumbled the opening kickoff but then held the Tigers to three and out. They then rolled 43 yards in just four plays with Goode scoring from 11 yards out for a 7-0 lead with less than See Goode, 2B GARY STEWART / HERALD Sidney Goode loose on a long run in Friday’s win at Fred T. Foard. Mad ‘Dogs here Friday By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald A top ten football team that is probably going to be growling will be coming to Kings Mountains John Gamble Stadium Friday night in search of its first Southwestern Foothills Conference win. The Burns Bulldogs, pre-season pick to win the SWFH and the third- ranked 3A team in the State, was upset by Gastonia Forestview 36-35 in a non-conference game last week at Burns. That was the Bulldogs’ first loss after four straight wins to open the season. Kings Mountain, on the other hand, had experienced four straight losses against top-notch non-confer- ence competition before defeating Fred T. Foard 44-12 in its opening conference game. With Kings Mountain's continued improvement in the running game, Coach Dave Farquharson said he | likes the Mountaineers’ chances of handing the Bulldogs a second straight defeat this week. Since lop-sided losses to East Gaston and South Point to open the See Dogs, 2B I GARY STEWART / HERALD Kings Mountain fullback J.J. McClain (44) runs through huge hole in the Fred T.
