Foard in junior varsity football action Thursday night at John Gamble Stadium. The win gives the Mountaineers a 1-0 Southwestern Foothills and 4-1 overall record heading into a game tonight at 7 o'clock at Burns High School. Kings Mountain returns home next week against Crest. After the fumble, the Mountaineers stopped Foard on downs at the KM 19 yard line and then reeled off touchdowns on three straight possessions for a 21-0 halftime lead. After a keeper by quarterback Ryan Burton for a first down, and two straight first down runs by Johnny Phillips, Burton pitched to Antwan Ross on a sweep around left end and Ross rambled 34 yards for a touchdown. Derrick Marble’s PAT from placement gave the Mountaineers a 7-0 lead with 4:16 left in the first quarter. Following a Foard punt, George Mayes reeled off a 28-yard run up the middle to set up a 14-yard touchdown pass from Burton ta Phillips for a 14-0 lead with 32.4 seconds left in the first period. Chase Gibson's sack of the Foard quarter- back forced Foard to punt again on its next possession from its own seven yard line, and KM gained possession at the Foard 29. Burton hit Phillips with a 23-yard pass for a first down at the six yard line, and following two penalties Phillips swept left end for a 21-yard touchdown run and a 21-0 lead with 7:22 left in the half. Demarius Grier sacked the Foard quarter- back on the Tigers” opening possession of the second half, forcing a punt which Phillips returned 30 yards to the Foard 38 yard line. On first down Nate Marble caught a 38-yard touchdown pass to give the Mountaineers a 27-0 lead. After that the Mounties began substituting freely, and eventually all 38 members of the team saw action. Foard’s threatened to score twice in the second half. Midway of the third quarter the Tigers drove to the KM 41 yard line. On fourth down, they had a receiver open in the end zone but KM defensive back Jarod Rainy made a spectacular play to tip the ball away from the intended receiver. Late in the game the Tigers recovered a fumble at the Mountaineer 23 and worked their way to a first and goal at the one. But KM'’s Michael Cline recovered a fumble to end the threat.
