It's autumn and in
Cleveland County that
means it's fair time. The
Cleveland County Fair
returns for its 79th season
“today through October 4.
The 2003 Cleveland
County Fair hosts 6,000
exhibits, 2,000 exhibitors,
music, food, family enter-
tainment, horticulture, live-
stock, elephants, history,
arts, crafts, and the famous
Reithoffer Midway Carnival.
“We try to have a bigger
and better one every year.
We've got a good program,
something for everyone,”
said Joe Goforth, Cleveland
County Fair general manag-
er.
Gates will open at 2 p.m.
on both Thursdays, both
Fridays, Monday and
Wednesday; at 9 a.m. both
Saturdays, noon on Sunday,
and at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
Gates close at 11 p.m. each
night. This year, the fair is
once again opening early on
Sunday to allow free atten-
dance to an interdenomina-
tional church service on the
Grandstand. The worship
{ service begins at 11 a.m.
i Also on Sunday, anyone
' bringing a church bulletin
from that day will be admit-
ted free until 2:30 p.m.
Tuesday is Senior Citizen
Day; all seniors are admitted
for $3 all day. Special events
are planned for seniors on
that day.
One of the most popular
attractions may be rides.
Weekends are armband days
for rides. On Saturday, Sept.
27 and Saturday, Oct. 4, arm-
bands for ride admission can
be purchased from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. These ride passes
are then valid for rides until
4 p.m. On Sunday,
September 28, armbands are
offered for sale from noon
until 5:30 p.m., valid until 7
p-m. The price for the arm-
band is $13.
The Opening Day special
is back again for the third
year. On Thursday, Sept. 25
_only, a combination price of
. $12 buys a gate ticket and an
+ armband good for rides
* from 4 p.m. until closing.

t will be reduced by one ticket
from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m.
This is the 28th year for
time keeper.
the Reithoffer Shows at the
Cleveland County Fair. The
business was founded in
1896 by Patrick Reithoffer,
Sr. and his brothers. The
present owner, Pat
Reithoffer, Jr., took up the
reins from his father and
uncles after World War II.
Music and dance are
planned for the fair.
The Frank Love Orchestra
Band will play Friday, Sept.
26 at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Sept. 27 at
2 p.m. the Cleveland School
of Dance will perform.
Carolina Dance Works will
perform at 3:30 p.m.
At 5 p.m. the Debbie Ward
School of Dance will per-
form.
On Sunday, Sept. 28 at
~ 2:30 p.m. Dance Reflections
will take the stage. Dancers
Place will perform at 3:30
p.m. and Tammie’s on Stage
Productions at 5 p.m.
On Monday, Sept. 29
7 p.m. the Miss Cleveland
County Fair Pageant will
beheld.
On Tuesday, Sept. 30 from
12:30 to 2:30 p.m. the
Wagon Wheelers senior citi-
zens program will take
place. At cheerleading per-
formance is scheduled for 7
p.m.
On Wednesday, Oct. 1
at 7 p.m. there will be a
Youth Talent Contest for
ages 12 to 18. On Thursday,
October 2 at 7 p.m. the con-
test will be for ages 5-11.
On Friday, October 3
at 7 p.m. the Karaoke
Kapers are slated.
The Academy of
Performing Arts will take
the stage at 11 a.m. Oct. 4.
Dance Magic performs at 3
p.m. Tammy Arrowood Stars
of Tomorrow hits the stage
at 5 p.m. The Starlite
Gymnastics and
Cheerleading Academy per-
form at 7:30 p.m.
A Demo Derby happens
Friday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
and Thursday, Oct. 2 at 7:30
p-m. Admission is $5 for
adults and $2 for children.
The Mud Sling starts at
7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1
Admission for adults is $4
children, $2.

Grover plans political forum
The Grover Women’s Club will sponsor a candidates
forum Oct. 9 at Grover Town Hall.
Mayoral and town council candidates are invited to par-
: ticipate. Candidates will give a three minute introduction
then field questions submitted by the public. The forum
will end with a summation by each candidate.

sonal encounter with the
world's largest land animals.

gram features Cora, a 46-
year-old Asian elephant,
weighing around 9,000
pounds and Shannon, a 22-
year-old African elephant
