A big defensive stand by Burns and ensuing 71-yard touchdown drive which resulted in a 17-0 halftime lead was too much for Kings Mountain to overcome Friday night at John Gamble Stadium and the Bulldogs escaped with a 23- It was the first conference win and fifth in six gams over- all for the Bulldogs, pre-season choice to win the Southwestern Foothills 3A Conference. Kings Mountain dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 1-5 overall heading into another big game against a county rival Friday night at The highly-favored Bulldogs had trouble fighting off Kings Mountain's inside running attack, but used a strong passing game led by sophomore quarterback Travis . Withrow and a solid inside running game of their own fea- turing Brandon Jackson to stay out front the entire game. Kings Mountain failed to take advantage of a pair of first half Burns turnovers but finally got their offense rolling in the second half, trimming the Bulldog lead to 17-14 before See Burns, 3B as It took almost the entire Burns defense to bring down Kings Mountain fullback J.J. Late drive seals win for Bulldogs GARY STEWART / HERALD Mounties at Crest Friday A AN SRA Ee GARY STEWART / HERALD Kings Mountain quarterback Montrell Banks keeps ball in Friday's game with Burns. By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Things won't get any easier for Kings Mountain's Mountaineers when they travel to Crest this week to take on one of the tradi- tional North Carolina football powers. True, the Chargers’ 2-3 record isn’t as impressive as those of years past. In fact, it’s their worst start in over a decade. But, that record is deceiving. Those three losses have been to three of the top-ranked football teams in North Carolina, 4A power West Charlotte, 3A jugger- naut South Point, and the Chargers’ arch rival, Shelby. During those three losses the Chargers were dealing with a lot of adversity which now seems to be in the distant past. The last two weeks the Chargers have been back to their old ways, soundly trouncing a good Hickory team 28-7 and edg- ing perennial South Carolina 4A power Marlboro County 17-14. Kings Mountain has improved also, but the Mountaineers have yet to put together four strong quarters against strong competi- tion. Mountaineer Coach Dave Farquharson is confident that when that finally happens his team will be able to play with anybody. He says Crest will be very simi- lar to Burns, who beat the Mounties 23-14 last week. “They're going to be big and fast and it’s going to be a pretty similar offense - the shotgun and one back,” Farquharson said. “They’ve got a bunch of athletes to move the football with.” : Heading the Crest attack is run- ning back Martray Littlejohn, a 170-pound junior who has taken over the top running back posi- tion after Coach Roy Kirby dis- missed All-American candidate Travis Padgett from the team. Another key on offense is jun- ior quarterback Maurice Gullatte, who is becoming comfortable in the position after being thrust into a starting role when Kirby dismissed Brandon Mauney the first week of practice. “They're going to test us again in the secondary,” Farquharson said. “Our focus again is going to be on trying to stop the run.” Defensively, the Chargers aren't as experienced or as big as they've been in the past. Former Kings Mountain player Chris Williamson is their top linebacker, and ex-Mountaineer Jermaine Strong plays wide receiver and defensive back. Kings Mountain will try to establish a run in hopes of con- trolling the tempo of the game, but Farquharson hopes to be able to throw the ball when necessary. “Offensively, we're not going to See Crest, 3A a TRY SR
