Page 9A Bill Worthen preaches first sermon at age 71 BY ANDIE L. BRYMER Staff Writer At age 71, Bill Worthen preached his first sermon in April. The Kings Mountain man preached at his home church, Carolina Praise and Worship Center. He was ordained by his denomina- tion, the Church of God, ear- lier this year. Worthen’s work within the denomination will revolve around teaching ministries and churches of all denominations how to obtain religious books and materials from publishers. He first learned to do this job volunteering for Son Light Ministries. The min- istry serves inmates at the county jail. Worthen says ministering to inmates brings him joy. He proudly displays a cloth inmates made for the ministry team. They painted praying hands clasping a BILL WORTHEN cross, an open Bible and flowers. The names of all the volunteers are listed at the top. “It’s a treasure for me,” he said. Worthen does not preach to the inmates, instead he offers a listening ear. “When I was out in sin I didn’t want people telling me what to do,” he said. Before becoming a Christian over 30 years ago, Worthen abused alcohol, was racist and felt hatred toward others. He gives God the credit for changing him. “Once the Lord works you over He does a good job if you let him,” Worthen said. He credits God for help- ing him overcome crippling arthritis and a weak heart. A few years ago he had trou- ble walking to the mailbox. Today Worthen has regained much of his strength though some days he still is in pain. “I don’t care what's wrong, I'm going to go on,” he said. Worthen says his wife Ruby often encourages him when he feels bad. “She is precious,” he said. Ever optimistic, Worthen is eager to continue his min- istry and savor every day till God calls him home. “I get a joy out of every- thing I do,” he said. - et Conveniently Located at I-85 and Dixon School Road Kings Mountain Truck Plaza ai RHE NTR CAL GREAT RL LE LOW PRICES ONALL TOBACCO le CIGARS, CHEWING [LEH LL CIGARETTES! “Ml Your Tobacco Needs At Affordable Prices!!” What is a Midwife?
