Page 2B The Kings Mountain Herald October 23, 2003 KM’s John Gwinn (23) fights for yardage in Friday’s game at St. Stephens ST. STEPHENS From 1B Coach David Farquharson commended his team for playing hard, but added that they made some mistakes at crucial moments. “We just found ourselves in a situation where we once again made some errors that changed the tempo of the game,” he said. “The pass interference hurt us, we fumbled the ball once on the exchange, and we dropped a pass interception in the end zone.” For the most part, both teams stuck with their tradi- tional running game, with the Mountaineers using a balanced running attack fea- turing several backs and the Indians going with their bread-and-butter man, Young, who is the SWFH's leading rusher. Kings Mountain attempted only three passes and didn’t con- nect on any, and St. Stephens hit 6 of 16 for 99 yards. “They were a lot like us in that they are a run-oriented team first,” Farquharson said. “I think they came in and tried to throw the ball more than they have against anybody else to give us something else to worry about. “But Young was their pre- mier back last year as a jun- ior, so I think with us being both in the same situation their game plan was to come in there and give it to their senior and do what they do best, which is run the ball. And they did a good job of it. Kings Mountain went mostly with its 1-2 running punch of sophomore tail- back Sidney Goode and soph fullback J.J. McClain. McClain, though, injured his ankle in the first half and missed the entire second half. Aaron Bolton and John Gwinn did a good job filling in. The Mountaineers drove the opening kickoff 60 yards in seven plays to take a 6-0 lead on a six-yard run by Goode. The KM defense held on downs at the 21 yard line to stop the Indians’ first scor- ing attempt, but early in the second quarter Scott Stillwell made a leaping 33- yard reception of a De Miller pass to give the - We Must Make Room For New Market Arrivals! | All Accessories | pu Lamps All Pictures All Plants & Arrangements All Loose Flowers Plus 20% Off All Special Tagged Furniture * MUST BE PICKED UP OR DELIVERED IN 5 DAYS AFTER PURCHASE! Again, the KM defense held but Scott Clark’s 31-yard field goal narrowed the KM lead to 6- S. Young got loose on a 46- yard touchdown run with 2:37 left in the half to put the Indians on top 9-6, but “the Mountaineers answered with a quick 64-yard march in just five plays to take a 13-9 halftime lead. Goode got the touchdown on a 12- yard run but the big play in the drive was a 44-yard run by McClain. The KM defense came up with two big stops in the second half to keep the Indians out of the end zone. First, a Clark 43-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright and later the Indians, aided by a pass interference against the Mounties, drove for a first and goal at the four. But the Mounties stopped the Indians dead in their tracks on three straight running plays, and a fourth down pass in the end zone intend- ed for Val Vasquez was tipped away by the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers were immediately penalized half the distance for a false start and couldn’t work out of the hole. They were forced to punt from their own end zone, and even after a penal- ty for a block in the back the Indians took possession at the KM 35. : Young scored from inside the one yard line and Clark added the PAT to give the Indians a 16-13 lead. It took the Mountaineers only six plays to drive 87 yards fol- lowing the kickoff, with Bolton's run putting KM back on top 19-16. » AT A GLANCE Thursday, October 23 7 p.m. - JV football, Kings Mountain at Hickory. They're a little Wing T type team so there will be a lot of mis- direction and counters and traps and we're going to have to come in and play good assignment football. We need to keep the game plan simple and try to do things that will put usin a position to be successful. But, both losses were by a touchdown or less. Two years ago, the Red Tornadoes beat the Mountaineers on a safety at Gamble Stadium, and last year in Hickory they broke up a potential game-winning pass in the end zone in the final seconds. Prior to both joining the SWFH, their last meeting was in the Western N.C. High Schools Activities Association playoffs in 1964. Hickory won 6-0.
