Staff Writer The Cherryville Railroad Museum has loaned lanterns, model trains and photos from a 1966 train wreck. Several dolls will be on view as well. Pat Plonk donated a 1938 Sonja Henie bisque doll. A 1938 teddy bear. a 1940 doll bed, a Madame Alexander doll and wooden toys are also part of the display. Victorian paper orna- ments, many made by Margaret Ledford, decorate the museum’s tree. The exhibit runs through Jan. 9. Santa is coming to Kings Mountain Historical Museum Saturday, Dec. 13. The jolly old elf will be there from 10 a.m. to noon. The museum is partnering with the city to offer free Polaroid photos for children who visit with Santa. “We're hoping we'll get a lot of kids here on the 13th,” museum director Mickey Crowell said. The museum currently has a train exhibit. Members of the Atlantic Coast S Gaugers and the Cherryville Model Railroad Club will be on hand every Saturday in December from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to answer questions. The will be an opportunity for hands on interaction with the trains. According to Bill Ware, a member of the S Gaugers, during the World War II era and before several passenger trains passed through Kings Mountain daily. “Trains were the primary means of transportation,” he said. According to Crowell, families would display their expensive model trains only on special occasions like Christmas. Beneath the tree was an excellent place to set up the set. ; Ware remembers local merchants placing trains in store windows to catch cus- tomers’ attention. The exhibit will feature Lionel Freight model trains from as early as 1919. A handmade model of a Kings Mountain Railroad train, made by Jim Massfeller, will be on dis- i . Santa, train exhibit play. Program Saturday at Crowders Mtn. “Juniper Ridge: A Piedmont Nonadnock” will be the program for Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at Crowders Mountain State Park. A ranger will lead a hike onto a relatively untouched section of the recently acquired Connector Property. Participants will observe plants typical of the Piedmont Monadnock Community and some of the rare species such as Ground Juniper and Eastern Turkeybread. The hike is of moderate difficulty and is in an area without trails. Participants should wear good hiking shoes and dress to deal with briars and steep, rocky slopes.
