BRYMER Staff Writer Kings Mountain students scored an average of 47 per- cent proficient on state writ- ing tests administered last year, however, officials say scores are low region wide. “We're not happy with where we are. We are no worse off than other peo- ple,” Assistant Superintendent John Goforth told the Kings Mountain District School's board during their Monday night meeting. KMDS fourth graders scored 46 percent proficient; seventh graders 52 percent, * and sophomores, 44 percent. Goforth told the board that the state has not offered adequate teacher training in how to prepare students for the test. The test was a pilot; there- fore schools are not held accountable for results. Prior to that test, state officials suspended t the test for two years to revise it.” 1 KMDS is now working with Cleveland County and Shelby City schools on teacher instruction, Goforth said. In all other state testing, Kings Mountain District Schools has an excellent track record with students scoring at or above state expectations. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Robert Eugene Edgerton Sr., died December 4, 2003 at home following an extended illness. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of Raymond Barnett and the late Mrs. Margaret Edgerton Carter. He was also pre- ceded in death by his sister, Ms. Mary Edgerton. He attended Davidson School. He was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Trustee and Usher Boards, and he was a donor for The Golden Hearts. He was a member of Moses Masonic Lodge #4, Kings Mountain, and a grand sponsor of The Order of Easter Star, ADAH Chapter #7, Kings Mountain. He was an avid golfer and was the first African American to play at the Kings Mountain Country Club course. He was a self-employed floor contractor. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mrs. Delores Boyd Edgerton of the home; sons Jimmy Brooks, William Thompson, Troy Thompson, Rodale Thompson and wife Velma, and Robert Edgerton Jr., all of Kings Mountain, and Jeffery Thompson of Rhode Island; daughter Ms. Donna Edgerton of Kings Mountain; father and step-mother, Raymond and Margaret Barnett of Baltimore, MD; sisters Mrs. Aileen Ellison and husband Sam of Charlotte, and Thelma Sutton of Kings Mountain; 19 grandchildren, five great- grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other rela- tives and friends.
