BRYMER Staff Writer A Kings Mountain woman is doing well after a stem cell transplant last week. Katheryn Jackson, who is battling lym- phoma, received the transplant Wednesday at the University of Chapel Hill Hospital. “The doctors say everything is right on target,” said Teresa Jackson, Katheryn's sis- ter. Teresa donated stem cells for the trans- plant. Her cells were harvested three weeks ago during a four hour procedure which fil- tered her blood. Doctors froze the cells until last week when Katheryn received them during a two hour procedure similar to a blood transfusion. “I thought the process would have taken longer,” Teresa said. Katheryn has felt groggy and is experienc- ing some nausea but was able to eat a bowl of potato soup from Bob Evans restaurant Friday. “It’s her favorite,” Teresa said. Despite the post-procedure discomfort, Katheryn is in good spirits, Teresa said. In addition to medical equipment, Katheryn’s hospital room contains a com- puter with an internet connection. Through the Caring Bridge site, she is able to post journal entries and correspond with others. In her entry Tuesday, Kathryn encourages others to speak out loud God’s promises. Then she gives a medical update, writing that her blood count dropped. She only needed two pints of blood that day. Before the transplant, Katheryn received strong doses of chemotherapy to suppress her immune system. This allows heribody to accept the transplanted cells from her sister. Because of her compromised immune sys- tem, Katheryn could not leave her hospital room. Katheryn will remain in the hospital for the next few weeks before moving to an apartment in Chapel Hill. She must live there for two months, visiting her doctor three times weekly. Someone must stay with Katheryn during that time to monitor her for sudden infection. Medicaid covered the cost of the trans- plant but will not cover the post-procedure expenses. To help, mail donations to 2055 Shelby Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086 in care of Bishop Brady Jackson. Katheryn is a member of Royal Praise Ministry for All People, formerly known as the Kings Mountain House of Prayer For All People. She has two sons, Tim Jackson and David Jackson, a daughter-in-law Melissa Jackson and three grandsons, Travis Jackson, Tyler Jackson and Anthony Nations.
