i ; EE . February 5, 2004 Kings Mountain High's wrestlers fin- ished second in the Southwestern Foothills 3A Conference tournament Saturday night. St. Stephens won the event with 206.5 points. Kings Mountain scored 159, R-S Central 132, Hickory 117.5, Burns 95.5, Crest 83.5 and Fred T. Foard 43. Kings Mountain didn’t win any indi- vidual championships but placed six wrestlers in the championship finals and six others in the consolation finals. Finishing second for the Mountaineers were Brandon McClain, Chris Patrick, Kyle Hargreaves, Blake Morgan, Josh Yon and Orlando Curry. Finishing third were Ryan Bolin, Kyle Smith and Steven Grant. Finishing fourth were Isaac Proctor, Phillip Ruff and Brad Camp. “I'look forward to a great finish this year with a very young team,” said veteran coach Alfred Ash. “We have seven sophomores starting, three jun- iors and four seniors. The young men have worked hard all year and have been steadily improving over the course of the season. I feel that several of our guys have a great shot at quali- fying for the Individual State Tournament if they keep the pace that they have set for themselves.” HM Prior to the conference tournament Saturday, the Mountaineers defeated R-S From 6A and D.J. Byrd nine points, five rebounds and four steals. “It was a good combina- tion of inside-out,” McDowell said. “The big guys did their job and the guards did their job.” The Kings Mountain Herald Wrestlers second in SWFH Burns 42-24 to wrap up second place in the Southwestern Foothills Conference and earn a berth in the State Dual Team Tournament which opened Tuesday night. The match was rescheduled due to bad weather last Tuesday night. The Mountaineers finished the regu- lar season 5-1 and were 15-6 overall heading into the State tournament. Kings Mountain went into the match needing a victory to wrap up one of only two SWFH berths in the State Tournament. A loss to Burns would have created a three-way tie for second between the Mountaineers, Bulldogs and R-S Central. If that had been the case, a draw would have determined the State berth. “Our wrestlers came out and wres- tled very well,” Ash said.
