The Kings Mountain Herald
Kings Mountain High basketball coach Danny McDowell, center, discusses strategy with
his team during a time out. Below, girls coach Kevin Moss instructs his players during
time out. >
GARY STEWART / HERALD
HISTORY
From 6A
in the third quarter of the
girls game, they were
focused,” McDowell said.
McDowell credited his
three seniors - Derrick
Smith, Dashawn Young and
Ta Tae Roebuck - with rally-
ing the team together.
“I'’knew right then we
were going to win,”
McDowell said. “Roebuck,
Smith and Young have been
on all three of these champi-
onship teams. They've been
there for the long haul and
they took charge. It was just
unbelievable.”
The Mountaineers didn’t
have one of their better
shooting nights, hitting just
33 percent from 3-point
range, 46 percent from 2-
point range, and 52 percent
from the foul line.
“But they did the other
things, like play defense,”
McDowell said. “Crest did-
n't get any fast break bas-
kets. We pressured the ball
all night.”
The Mountaineers got a
great all-around game from
several players, including
Antonio Feaster who started |
in the place of Byrd. He
scored 13 points and
grabbed 12 rebounds.
“That was incredible con-
sidering the pressure he was
under,” McDowell said. “We
plugged him into the lineup
and didn’t miss a beat. He
had to be the MVP of the
game for what he did.”
Smith had 18 rebounds,
six steals and six assists and
had another exceptional
floor game. Gabe Blair had
17 points, 12 rebounds and
six blocked shots. Roebuck
had 11 points and 11
rebounds, and Young had
eight points, six rebounds,
four assists and five steals.
David McClish came off the
bench to grab seven
rebounds and score four
points.
Blair and Feaster held the
Chargers’ big man, Brandon
Spikes, who scored 25 in an
earlier game at KM, to four
points. The first shot Spikes
attempted was blocked by
Blair.
“The guys were focused
the entire game,” McDowell
said. “They never lost their
composure.”
After the early 9-2 run the
Mountaineers built a 24-14
first quarter lead. Crest
made a minj-run and cut the
margin to 38-29 at halftime
and 41-35 early in the third
quarter. But the
Mountaineers went on an
18-6 run to put the game on
ice. They led by as many as
23 in the second half and
held a 20-point advantage
with two minutes to play
before the Chargers cut the
final margin against KM’s
second unit.
“Everybody got to play,
but I was just real proud of
those seniors for stepping
up and Alving us the leader-
C
ship,” said McDowell. “I
didn’t have to say a thing.
They knew what they had to
do.”
McDowell called the game
“the most complete game”
the Mountaineers have
played all year.
“To go into a hostile envi-
ronment and beat a good
team like Crest is a tremen-
dous win,” McDowell said.
“The kids took it as a per-
sonal challenge.
“We've always talked
about family. One of our
family members went down
and Antonio Feaster stepped
up. What he did was just
exceptional.”
Although the
Mountaineers were pleased
to win the championship,
they took it all in stride.
“They know they've still
got some things to do,”
McDowell said. “They came
here for a purpose and now
they want to go out with a
bang.”
Byrd's status is doubtful
for this week’s SWFH tour-
nament, but McDowell
hopes to have the big man
back for the start of the State
3A playoffs next week.
“He has a tear in the back
of his knee,” McDowell said.
“The doctor said it won't get
any worse, but he can’t run
and that makes it tough in
our style of play.”
Because of their regular
season title, the
Mountaineers will draw the
top seed from the SWFH
regardless of what happens
in the SWFH tournament.
The Mountaineers will be
trying to win their second
straight Sectional champi-
onship which would qualify
them for their second
straight trip to the Western
Regionals, just one step
away from the State champi:
onship game.
“If we don’t win another
game I couldn’t be more
proud of these kids,”
McDowell said. “To win
three championships in a
row in this area is tough. It’s
rarely seen unless you're in
one of those cupcake
leagues that you know you
can dominate. But there are
six or seven teams in our
league that can play with
the number one and two
teams.”
HM Kings Mountain's girls
dropped the opening game,
64-32, to finish last in the
SWFH with an 0-12 confer-
ence and 1-19 overall mark.
Candace Springs led the
Lady Mounties with 11
points.

Millwood to get $11 million from Phillies
Bessemer City native Kevin Millwood will make an esti-
mated $11 million in his second year with the Philadelphia
Phillies.
Millwood agreed last week to a one-year contract after he
previously asked for $12.5 million while the Phillies only
wanted to pay $10 million. Millwood made $9.9 million in
his first season at Philadelphia.
In November, Millwood was offered a three-year deal
worth $30 million with the option for a fourth year.
However, Millwood's agent rejected the offer that was later
withdrawn by the Phillies when the team acquired Eric
Milton from Minnesota.
