The Kings Mountain Herald April 22, 2004 3 Moss Davidson Teacher of Year BY ANDIE L. BRYMER Staff Writer Davidson Teacher of the Year Kevin Moss says adminis- trators and the eight-member faculty at his school are a tight knit team. “We work well together. Mr. Grigg the principal, does a good job. We all help each other. We share ideas, thoughts,” he said. : The school, located in Kings Mountain, can serve up to 72 middle and high school stu- dents who would otherwise face suspension. Before merger, the school was a partnership KEVIN MOSS between Kings Mountain District Schools and Cleveland County Schools. Moss began his career at his alma mater Kings Mountain High School teaching two autistic students. After they grad- | uated, their were no other autistic students needing a spe- cial education instructor so Moss transferred to Davidson. He believes good mentoring has helped him be a success. That began with an internship at Green Valley Elementary in Watauga County and continued when he returned to Kings Mountain. “I've been real lucky to come back here and get the help I've had,” Moss said. Davidson students are often very bright but have difficul- ty respecting authority, according to Moss. Students are awarded points for good behavior. Enough points and pass- ing grades and they can return to their home schools. Moss majored in special education because he preferred teaching a variety of subjects instead of specializing in one or two areas. Working with special needs students while at Applachian State University also influenced his decision. His long term goal is to become an administrator. Moss and his wife Amy Moss, a teacher at East Elementary, both wanted to continue their education. She just completed graduate school and is awaiting National Teacher Board Certification results. Next up, Kevin Moss will return to school. In addition to his responsibilities at Davidson, Moss coaches women’s varsity basketball and men’s golf at Kings Mountain High School. He also enjoys fishing and gardening. Moss admits he did not enjoy digging in the dirt when his father made him help out as a child but now finds the activity a good way to KMIS honor rolls Kings Mountain Intermediate School has released its A and A /B honor rolls for the third nine week.
