Church women dinner raises unds for KM Crisis Ministry BY ANDIE L. BRYMER Staff Writer A Rock Hill storyteller entertained women from seven downtown churches last week during their annual dinner. Charlotte Yoos Hickam told funny and inspirational stories to the approximate 100 women gathered at Resurrection Lutheran Church Thursday night. She started with a snap- py, contemporary version of Little Red Riding Hood. Continuing in the humor- ous vein, dinner guests were encouraged to repeat back tongue twisters about Aunt Betty Brown Botter’s bitter butter. . A serious story illustrated how faults we struggle to change can actually be strengths. In the tale, a water bearer carries two pots on each shoulder. One pot assumes it is perfect because it has no cracks. The other leaks water. The leaking pot becomes depressed and apologizes to the water bearer for losing half its load each day. The water bearer explains that he has planted flower seeds on the + same side of the road that he carries that pot. Without its cracks, the seeds would never have sprouted. “Are you wanting to change? Maybe God is using you to water the flowers,” Hickam said. Vocalist Anne Gamble and pianist Cecelia Hensley performed also. Betty Benton gave the invocation and Karen Tucker, the benediction. The evening ended with the crowd singing “Blest Be the Tie That Binds.” Women from Kings Mountain Baptist, Boyce Memorial ARP, Central and Grace United Methodist, Resurrection and St. Matthews Lutheran and First Presbyterian have gathered together on the first Thursday of May for the past 18 years, according to this year’s organizer Connie Bell. “It’s something unique we started in Kings Mountain,” she said. The women, who often saw each other in passing, started the dinner to have a time devoted to fellowship, according to Bell. Proceeds from ticket sales were donated to Kings Mountain Crisis Ministry.
