P&Z board approves rezoning,
matter now goes to KM council
BY ANDIE L. BRYMER
Staff Writer
Objection to a conditional
use rezoning came down to
the smell of manure during
a Monday afternoon Kings
Mountain Planning and
Zoning board meeting.
Stephen and Amy Sutton
applied last month for the
permit which would allow
them to have horses and cat-
tle at their 108 Chestnut
Ridge Road home. Board
members continued the
hearing to June, requesting
additional information from
the Suttons.
Planning Director Steve
Killian told board members
that the Suttons had speci-
fied location options for the
barn and had agreed to drop
the number of cattle from 15
to eight.
Neighbor Jim Claffe of
1315 Piedmont Avenue
objected to the zoning
change.
“A cow is a machine that
produces manure; milk and
meat are a by product,” he
said.
Claffe told planning board
members that he purchased
his home 19 years ago from
a widow. Two other widows
lived in the homes adjacent
to his.
“Nineteen years later I
live next to a feedlot. I did-
n’t choose to live next to a
feedlot,” he said.
Claffe said that the
Suttons had been good
neighbors expect for heed-
ing his request to get rid of
their animals.
The planning board unan-
imously recommended the
Volunteers needed for
June 19 triathlon in KM
Volunteers, especially ones on boats, kayaks and jet skis,
are needed for the City of Kings Mountain's third annual
Over the Mountain triathlon June 19.
The U.S. Triathlon Series sanctioned event begins at Moss
Lake and travels through three area parks.
Volunteers are needed to help with registration, refresh-
ment stations and on the water.
“We had a great turn out of volunteers last year but we
can always use more help,” said Ellis Noell, special events
director for the city.
Volunteers will receive a race tee shirt, dinner with the
athletes and will attend a wrap up celebration.
According to Noell, more athletes are making the race
one of the six they must compete in for the state Triatttlon
Series championship.
For more information, call Noell at 704-730-2103.
