The center offers adult day care and health services for people with develop- mental disabilities, strokes and Alzheimer’s disease. ‘The Kings Mountain facility opened at 222 Kings Mountain Boulevard March 1. Future plans include a Boiling Springs location. The Shelby center opened in 1980. The open house will run from 2 to 5 p.m. A dedica- tion program begins at 3 p.m. For more information, call 704-739-4858. : Auditions slated for ‘Annie Jr.’ Kings Mountain Little Theatre plans to present “ Annie Jr.,” a version of the beloved “Annie” adapted for ages 10-18. The performances will be September 10 and 17. Auditions will be June 14-15 at 7 p.m. at Joy Performance Center, 201 Railroad Avenue, Kings Mountain. Practice will be during the summer, but ample allowances for vacations will be allowed. Major parts are Annie, six orphans, Miss Hannihan, Grace Farrell, Oliver Warbucks, Rooster Hannihan, Lilly St. Regis, ED.R., and incidental char-" acters. A volunteer trail work day will be held Saturday, June 12 from 8 a.m.-12 noon at Crowders Mountain State Park. The Ridgeline Trail, which will eventually connect Crowders Mountain and Kings Mountain State Parks, is under construction and the trail will be built largely by volunteers. Those interested should call the park office at 853- 5375. Work groups will meet and leave from the visitors center. Wear work clothes and good hiking boots/shoes. Take gloves, water and snacks. Discovery lake hike at Crowders Mtn. A discovery lake hike will be held Saturday, June 12 at 2 p.m. at Crowders Mountain State Park. A ranger will lead the hike: around the lake. Meet at the lake fishing pier and dress appropriately for the weath- er. The program will be can- celled if it rains. Call the park at 853-5375 for more information. EMILY STONE Emily Stone | is one year old Emily Stone recently cele- brated her first birthday with a party at her grand- mother’s house. Friends and family attended. Emily is the daughter of Kristie Stone of Kings Mountain and the sister of Trinity Stiles. She is the granddaughter of Clarence and Virginia Wood of Kings Mountain. Ranger on Ridge program at park The Ranger on the Ridge program will be presented Sunday, June 13 at 1 p.m. at Crowders Mountain State Park. Participants will be able to ask a ranger ques- tions about the park. Call 853-5375 for more information. Grabblin’ on Broad slated on June 13 Grabblin’ on the Broad will be held Sunday, June 13 from 2-4 p.m. at the Broad River Greenway. Alan Jones will lead the outing. Participants will learn to wade in and “tick- le” catfish from their rocky homes. Wear water shoes and be prepared to get wet. Most of the activity will be held under the Hwy. 150 bridge. For more information call 434-2357. Butterfly program at Crowders Mtn. Beginning to Butterfly will be presented Saturday, June 19 at 11 a.m. at Crowders Mountain State Park. The program will intro- duce participants to butter- flies and how to garden to ‘attract them. There will be a short slide show. Meet at the visitors center. Call 853-5375 for more information. Fishing clinic set at Crowders Mtn. The NC Catch Fishing Clinic will be offered Saturday, June 19 from 4- 6:30 p.m. at Crowders * Mountain State Park. The program is limited to + 15 children, ages 8-15, who must be accompanied by an adult. Call 853-5375 to sign up. Participants should take tackle, if they have it. If not, it will be provided. Participants will learn the * basics of angling and spend an hour of classroom time learning about tackle, bait, knots and safety, followed by an hour of fishing at the lake. Star gazing set at Boiling Springs Stars over Boiling Springs, an evening of star gazing with Steve Davis, will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 19 at the Broad River Greenway Ranger Station. Participants will learn constellations and identify far away galaxies and catch a glimpse of a nearby plan- et. Take binoculars. Telescopes will be set up for viewing. For more information call 434-2357. Learn about NC parks at Crowders A program on North Carolina parks will be pre- sented Sunday, June 20 from 2-3 p.m. at Crowders Mountain State Park. . Participants will learn about NC state parks, their attractions and facilities. Meet at the visitors center. Call 853-5375 for more information. Geology program at Crowders Mtn. Twin Peaks Monadnocks will be presented Monday, June 21 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Crowders Mountain State Park. The program is geared toward teachers and non- formal educators and covers activities to help students understand basic geological concepts. Topics include park history, geological his- tory of the Kinds Mountain Belt, and ho to identify some of the primary rocks and minerals in the park. The morning session will be inside and the afternoon session involves a strenuous hike to the top of Crowders Mountain via Backside Trail. Meet at the. visitors center and take good hiking shoes, water and a bag lunch. Participants must contact the park at 853-5375 to sign ‘up. The program is limited to 20 people, minimum of 10. . Canoe skills set at Crowders Mtn. A basic canoe skills class will be held Friday, June 25 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Crowders Mountain State Park. The program is for chil- dren ages 7-up but each child must be accompanied by an adult 18 years of age or older. Participants will learn basic strokes and techniques and will have enough time to practice. Cozart installed as Regent of Hambright DAR Chapter Colonel Frederick Hambright Chapter DAR held its monthly meeting” recently at Mauney Memorial Library. Regent Margaret McGinnis called the meeting to order and welcomed the ten members present. Margaret Ledford led the DAR Ritual and American's Creed. Loretta Cozart led the pledges to the U.S. and North Carolina flags. 2 Betty Masters gave the national defense report and presented the President’s general message. Aileen Husky was induct- ed into membership and presented her DAR pin by Chaplain Margaret Ledford. She is the chapter’s tenth new member and brings the total membership to 66. Three of Mrs. Husky's daughters are also members of the chapter. Ms. Ledford installed the new Regent, Loretta Cozart, and Margaret McGinnis passed the gavel to Cozart. Cozart presented a pro- gram on the North Carolina State Conference that was ‘held in Durham the previ- ous weekend. The awards luncheon on Saturday included a State Chorus that performed at the Saturday night dinner and also for a memorial service on Sunday morning. Loretta Cozart, Betty Masters, Robin Meyer and Julia Long represented the KM chapter at the confer- ence. The minutes from the last meeting were read by Betty Masters and approved. The treasurer’s report was pre- sented and approved. A motion was made by Betty Potter to increase the chapter’s Good Citizen's scholarship to $100 each year. Fran Sincox seconded and the action passed unani- mously. Margaret Ledford gave a report on the progress being made to preserve the Preston Goforth cemetery. A lawyer has been hired and is checking on the ownership of the cemetery. As soon as a ~ survey is completed the committee hopes to pur- chase the property. A motion by Betty Masters to give $100 to the Preston Goforth Cemetery Fund was second by Margaret McGinnis and approved. LIFESTYLES DEADLINES Deadline for lifestyles news is 12 noon Monday. DAR honors Good Citizen The Colonel Hambright Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution recently honored its 2003-04 Good Citizen, Thomas Carter Bridges, and his family. Each year the DAR asks its Good Citizen to apply for numerous scholarships from the State Society. Fran Sincox, Good Citizen Chairman, introduced Thomas to the membership. He is a member of the KMHS band, Kings Review, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society, Beta Club, Future Teachers of America, Key Club and Renaissance Club. He is also active in his church and community. The DAR was notified that Bridges had won a DAR scholarship from the State Scholarship Committee.
