Hope Christian to open in KM on August 23 BY ANDIE L. BRYMER Staff Writer Hope Christian Academy plans to open August 23 at East Gold Street Wesleyan Church. The school anticipates its location will draw students from Gastonia and Shelby as well as Kings Mountain. So far 45 students have enrolled. Hope needs 75 students by June 30 to become a reali- ty. The school can handle up to 90 students before adding another teacher, according to principal and instructor Ray Sibley. The maximum for the East Gold Street facility is 120. The school will use the A- Beka curriculum. A team of teachers who used to work at First Assembly Christian School in Gastonia are on the Hope faculty. Teachers in core subject areas have an average of 11 years experi- ence each. “We want to offer the same program and improve on it,” Sibley said. The school will offer math through calculus, science through physics and plans to offer advanced placement classes in the future. Students from First Assembly have gone on to UNC-Chapel Hill and other state universities, USC and Liberty University. All teachers have bache- lors degrees and a few have masters, Sibley said. He is currently working on a mas- ters in science at Mississippi State and plans to write a text book on Earth science for use in Christian schools. The school will serve grades six through 12. Band, chorus and drama classes will be open to middle school age students. These programs will be offered after school to ninth through 12th graders. Spanish class will be available to high school age students. Each school day begins - with a Bible class. There will be a weekly chapel service. Hope will use the King James Version of the Bible. The school is non-denomi- national and believes the Bible is the “final authority and is inspired by God.” Hope's statement of faith says that the universe was created by God in six literal, 24-hour days. The school plans to offer soccer, baseball, basketball, golf, volleyball, softball, cross country and cheerlead- ing contingent on student interest. There will be a booster club for athletics and a par- ent club to support academ- ics. Tuition is $300 per month. There is also a one-time $200 supply fee, one-time $200 book fee and a $50 reg- istration fee. The school is a non-profit venture. For more information, call 734-1936 or 865-9334. Bridges graduates Davidson College Matthew Bradley Bridges of Kings Mountain was one of 418 seniors to graduate in recent commencement exer- cises at Davidson College.
