Twelve teams competed in the event. At the end of pool play the pool winners were placed in Division One, and the bottom six teams played in Division Two. Kings Mountain won its pool play with victories over the Carolina Comets of Mooresville and the Carolina Girls. They then entered Division One, the toughest bracket, and lost to the Denver Dazzle Blue, defeated Carolina Girls, and lost to the Randolph County Knockouts. For the tournament, Brittney Thornburg and Natalyn Blanton led the Lightning at the plate with averages of .462 each. Courtney Tate hit .364, Kala Buchanan .300, Kristyn Funderburke .273, Morgan Childers .231 and Jessica Yarbro .214. In their first game on Friday, the Lightning blanked the Carolina Comets 8-0 behind the one-hit pitching of Kristyn Funderburke. Funderburke struck out nine. Tate led the hitting with 2-for-2. Blanton went 2-for-3, including a double and two runs batted in. Yarbro and Childers had one hit each. Kings Mountain defeated the Carolina Girls 2-1 behind a five-hit, 12-strikeout per- formance by Childers. The only run scored off her was unearned. Thornburg had a two-run triple in the fourth inning to account for both KM runs. Yarbro, Buchanan and Tate also had hits for KM. In their first game in the championship bracket on Saturday morning, the Lightning lost 1-0 to the Denver Dazzle Blue Team. Funderburke went the distance on the mound, giving up three hits and fanning four. Funderburke and Thornburg had the only two hits for KM. Childers pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10 as the KM girls bounced back with a 7-1 win over the Carolina Girls. Blanton and Thornburg led the hitting with 3-for-3 each. . Buchanan was 2-for-2 and Funderburke, Childers, Tate and Laura Weigel had one hit each. In their final game, the Lightning lost to the Randolph County Knockouts 5-3 in eight innings. Funderburke pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up one hit, and Childers pitched 6 2/3 innings and struck out 11. Jean Constant says he will not be back at Kings Mountain High as men’s soccer coach in the fall. He plans to take some college courses at UNCC. He has been a non-faculty coach for the past two seasons... Several Kings Mountain High baseball players are competing for area legion teams this summer. Brothers Tyler and Ryan Leach are playing for Gastonia Post 23. Brandon Bridges is playing for Cherryville Post 100, and Weston Taylor, Trey Glass, David Brinkley and Matt Echols are playing for Shelby Post 82... Enka, which came from behind in the last inning to eliminate Kings Mountain from the State 3A softball playoffs, lost the State Championship game to Southern Alamance in much the same fashion. Southern scored two runs in the 10th inning to edge the Sugar Jets 8-6... The North Carolina High School Athletic Association is celebrating its 90th year by naming the Notable Ninety teams in state histo- ry. The 90 teams are being announced in increments. Shelby High's 1987 State 3A champions, coached by Jim Taylor, were one of the foot- ball teams selected. The baseball and other teams will be announced later... Unless something unfore- seen happens, the new 2A /3A conference for Cleveland and Rutherford County schools is set in stone for the 2005 realign- ment. The NCHSAA realign- ment committee did not make any changes to the local league at its final meet- ing Tuesday in Chapel Hill. Schools still have an oppor- tunity to appeal on proce- dural mistakes, but there were apparently no proce- dural errors on setting up the local conference. Kings Mountain will play in a league with fellow 3A mem- bers R-S Central and Burns, and 2A schools Shelby, Chase and East Rutherford. The Mountaineer Tennis Camp was recently held at the Kings Mountain tennis courts and was attended by nearly 30 area students.
