According to Kings Mountain Mayor Rick Murphrey, the event attracted city residents along with families from Shelby, Gastonia, Clover and Blacksburg, S.C. Murphrey said he also talked to people from Nebraska and Ohio who were in the area and decided to attend the fireworks show. One couple had heard about it and held their departure till Sunday. “They were all so complimentary,” Murphrey said. Dressed as a patriot, Murphrey rode quar- ter horse Newman through the crowds. While holding a Continental flag, he took the horse for a fast ride as Lee Greenwood'’s “I'm Proud To Be An American” played. Kings Mountain’s 505th National Guard unit hoisted a 15 by 25 foot American flag from a crane. Guardsmen also brought a pan and humvie to the city’s walking track. The equipment was a hit with kids. Lines formed for RO's barbecue, candy apples, cotton candy, Polish sausage, pizza, funnel cakes and patriotic hats. Dressed as an Over The Mountain Man, Dale Putnam shot a musket, readying the crowd for a fireworks show produced by Scott Neisler. Taps was played as five fire works, attached to parachutes, floated through the air before extinguishing and landing. These honored fallen soldiers. As more pyrotechnics lighted the sky, the voices of two recently deceased American icons played over the public address sys- tem. Former President Ronald Reagan called the country a city on a hill and Ray Charles sung his rendition of “America.” The celebration cost the city $9,000. "Fox Distributing of Shelby donated $1,000 in additional money, according to City Events Director Ellis Noell. There were a few minor traffic accidents after the event but no injuries, Noell said.
