OBITUARIES The Kings Mountain Herald July 29, 2004 DONALD LEE PARKER BAXTER, TN - Donald Lee Parker, 91, of the Martin Creek Community of Putnam County, died Saturday, July 24, 2004 at his home. A native of Newport, TN, he was the son of the late John Milton and Zelma Proffitt Parker. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Lyda and Mary Kate Murray; and one brother, James “Jim” Parker. He graduated in 1938 from Maryville College and that Fall began his teaching and coaching career at Mars Hill High School in North . Carolina. He taught at Hendersonville High School, Fletcher High School and Kings Mountain High School. He taught and coached in Kings Mountain from 1943 until retiring in 1975. He also served as Assistant principal and Director of the Headstart Title 1 Program. He served as head basket- ball coach at Kings Mountain High School from 1943-1967. He also coached football, baseball and golf. The Kings Mountain High School gymnasium was named for him and dedicat- ed in his honor in 2001. In his younger years he was a professional baseball player with Newport and Tarboro. He was Past President of the Kings Mountain Kiwanis Club. He taught Sunday School at Central United - Methodist Church, Kings Mountain, for 28 years. Since moving to the Martin Creek Community in 1998 he attended Bethany United Methodist Church near Baxter. He is survived By his wife of 66 years, Nell Stepp Parker of the Martin Creek Community; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald Lee Parker Jr. of Dallas, TX and James “Punch” Parker and Lisa Halfacre Parker of the Martin Creek Community; sister Dorothy Griffin of Cincinnati, OH; grandchil- dren Donald Lee Parker III of Knoxville, TN, Debra Jean Carmini of Dallas, TX, Kristopher Cayce Parker of Garber, OK and Stormi McDow; and great-grand- children Donald Lee Parker IV, Jessica Parker, and Kylie and Kellyn Carmini. v A memorial service was conducted by the Revs. Vincent Baker and J. Glea = Shelley at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 28 at Baxter Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, August 6 at Central United Methodist Church in Kings ‘Mountain. Visitation is from 1-3 p.m. at the church. JANICE HARDING KINGS MOUNTAIN - Janice Boheler Harding, 67, 905 Margrace Road, died July 26, 2004 at her home. A native of Cherokee County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Johnson Herbert and Annie Louise Martin Boheler. She was also preceded in death by her brother, John Robert Boheler, and sister Helen Boheler Moss. ." She was a homemaker and member of First Church of the Nazarene. She is survived by her son, Arthur David Harding and wife Lora of Patterson Springs; daughter Wanda H. Gsellman and husband Kenny of Kings Mountain; grandchildren Justin Kenneth Gsellman, David Dewayne Harding, Heather Dawn Harding, and Amanda Nichole Williams; and great-grandchildren Tyler Williams, Alexis Williams, McKinsey Williams and David Dewayne Harding Jr. The funeral will be con- ducted by the Rev. Mike Daughrity at 4 p.m. Friday at First Church of the Nazarene. Interment will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Harris Funeral Home. FLIP LANIER KINGS MOUNTAIN - Shephard Wolfe “Flip” Lanier, 44, 1010 Sherwood Lane, died July 21, 2004 at Kings Mountain Hospital. He was born in Key West, FL, son of the late Richard Lanier. He was a self employed landscaper and a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church in Gastonia. He is survived by his mother, Ellen Wolfe Lanier of Kings Mountain; brother Richard Lanier Jr. of San Francisco, CA; and sister Anna Lanier of Richmond, VA. HELEN HAMRICK KINGS MOUNTAIN - Helen Neal Hamrick, 86, long time resident of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at the Wendover Hospice unit in Shelby. Born in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late M.C. and Dovie Bowen Neal and widow of David R. Hamrick. She was also pre- ceded in death by brothers Marion Neal, Jacob Neal, Dewitt Neal and Paul Neal and sisters Katie Anthony and Fairy Anthony. She was active in Central United Methodist Church for many years and was a member of Christian Freedom Baptist Church. She was a retired private school teacher and home- maker. She is survived by her daughters, Norma H. Drewery and husband Charles of Kings Mountain, and Brenda Gail Roberson and husband John of Concord; brother Fred R. Neal of Kings Mountain; grandchildren Jon Moore and wife Kim of Kings Mountain, Gianna Baynard. and husband Johnny of Gastonia, and Kristina Patterson and husband Jeff ‘of Gastonia; and great- grandchildren Bill Fralick and wife Heather of Kings Mountain, and Jon Michael Moore of Kings Mountain. The funeral was conduct- ed by the Rev. Chris Little at 2 p.m. Friday, July 23 at El Bethel United Methodist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. MARTHA COX POTEAT ALEXANDRIA, VA - Martha Cox Poteat, long time resident of McLean, VA, died July 6, 2004 at her home in Alexandria. A native of Greenville, SC, she was raised in Kings Mountain and graduated from Kings Mountain High “School. She raised her family in McLean, VA, London, England, and Oslo, Norway. She obtained her under- graduate degree from Marymount University and her Master's degree from Georgetown University. After retiring as a full-time homemaker, she was an active member of many organizations in Northern Virginia, and she worked as a stringer for the Connection Newspapers, covering many events in McLean. She became a licensed pilot in 1983. She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years. S. Eugene Poteat; daughters Mary Ann Schaffer and S. Elisabeth Poteat, and a sister, Sarah Cox Shaw, all of Alexandria. A memorial service was held July 10. RICK WEDEMEYER KINGS MOUNTAIN - Richard “Rick” Frederick Wedemeyer, 51, 904 Woodside Drive, died July 22,2004 at Presbyterian Hospital. A native of Snohomish County, WA, he was the son of Robert W. Wedemeyer Sr. and the late Yvonne Reardan Wedemeyer. He was a mem- ber of Serenity Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served as an EMT. He is survived by his wife, Judy Nichols Wedemeyer of the home; father and step- mother, Robert and Laverta Wedemeyer of Everette, WA; stepdaughter and husband, Kimberly Falls and Jeffrey Humphries of Gastonia; sis- ter, Valerie and Bill Scott of Edgewood, WA; mother-in- law and father-in-law, Hubert and Sarah Nichols of Gastonia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lester and Linda Lanford of Gastonia; grandchildren, Joshua Aaron and Matthew Tyler Humphries; nephews, Robert W. ANNIE MAE GREEN KINGS MOUNTAIN - Annie Mae Shipman Green, 96, of White Oak Manor, died July 24, 2004 at her home. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daugh- ter of the late George and Minnie Owensby Shipman and widow of Evans M. Green. She was also preced- ed in death by her daugh- ters, Pauline Russell and Helen Ross, sister Novella Davenport and brother Bill Owensby. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and was retired from textiles. She is survived by her son, Vernon E. Ford and wife Ruth of Glenrock, PA; daughters Maxine Holt and husband Robert of Bessemer City and Barbara K. Jones and husband Alan of Kings Mountain; and numerous grandchildren, great-grand- children and great-great grandchildren. A private funeral will be held. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Butler and Gladys Littlejohn McSwain and hus- band of the late Frances Phyllis Sears McSwain. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mertis Davis. He was retired from New Haven Foundries in New Haven, MI and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He is survived by his sons, Howard McSwain Jr. of Mt. Clemens, MI, Corey McSwain and wife Katherine of Honolulu, HI, Stacey McSwain and wife _ Cathy of Charlotte, and Lloyd McSwain of Shelby; daughters Camille McSwain of Kings Mountain, Gladys McSwain of Boiling Springs, Tari Ross of Shelby, Katherine McSwain of ‘Detroit, MI, and Brenda Matthews of Arlington, TX; sister Katherine Petty and husband Sam of Boiling Springs; 43 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Jerry Morrow Helmes, 61, 1608 Shelby Road, died July 23, 2004 at his home. A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Thomas Helmes. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Harvey Morrow, and brother Hubert Boyles. He was pastor of True Gospel Holiness Church, which he founded in 1982. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marie Knox Helmes of Kings Mountain; daughters Donna Hulsey and husband Terry of Kings Mountain and Rev. Le Ann Chapman and husband Rick of Kings Mountain; grand- children Landon Hulsey and Matthew Hulsey, and Hannah Chapman and - Jordan Chapman, all of Kings Mountain; sisters Wilma Pendleton, Shirley Scruggs and Wanda West, all of Kings Mountain, and Evelyn Champion of Shelby; and brothers H.D. Morrow of Shelby and Paul Morrow of Kings Mountain. The funeral was conduct- ed by the Revs. Gordon Stacy, Jack Green and Bill Daniels at 5 p.m. Monday at True Gospel Holiness Church. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daugh- ter of the late Dock and Myrtle Bell Morrow and wife of the late Herman Morrison. She was also pre- ceded in death by a brother, Johnny Morrow, and grand- son Justin Braswell. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her sons, Herman Morrison Jr., Randy Morrison and wife Elaine, and Scott Morrison, all of Kings Mountain; daughter Donna M. Walker and husband Jim Larry Walker of Kings Mountain; brothers Frank Morrow of Kings Mountain, Stanley Morrow of Denmark, David Morrow, Archie Morrow, Dennis Morrow and Glen Morrow, all of Shelby; sisters Sarah Jones, Louise Robinson and Bonnie Pearson, all of Shelby, and Cathy Elgin of Kings Mountain; grandchildren Sherri Hughes of Grover; and great-grandchildren Brandon Darnell and Ashley Hughes.
