KMMS to begin football practice Kings Mountain Middle School will begin football tryouts Monday, August 2 from 3-5:30 p.m. All players are to meet in the KMMS gym. All players must have a sports physical on file in order to practice. Those who do not have a current physical must see a doctor to complete and sign the sports physical form. Forms are available in the school office All players are required to attend every practice. Any player with an unexcused absence will be dismissed from the team. Parents must contact head coach Monty Deaton at 734-5670 prior to practice for a player to be excused. Practice will be held rain or shine. Players are required to wear gym shorts, white T-shirt and conditioning and/or run- ning shoes. The first game is sched- uled for August 25. KM Optimist sets football sign-ups Kings Mountain Optimist Club will be holding regis- tration for football and cheerleading July 31 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at City Stadium. Parents are urged to join the Optimist Booster Club when they register their children. Registration is open for boys and girls between the ages of 7-13. All persons reg- istering must take a certified birth certificate, copy of last year’s report card (showing all four quarters) and a physical completed by August 1, 2004. KM Wildcats third in Dream Tourney The Wildcats of Kings Mountain finished third among 64 teams in the recent Cooperstown Field of Dreams Tournament in Cooperstown, NY. Ray Robinson served as head coach for the second year after assisting Tim Leach for three years. This was Robinson's final year as coach as his son Rai would age out at the end of the season. Robinson's oldest son, Trey, and Tim Waters served as assistant coaches. After just two full practices together, the Wildcats entered the Cooperstown field and won 10 straight games before losing in the semifinals. Dylan White led the team in hitting with a .758 average and seven home runs. Kris Thompson hit .636 with four home runs, Rai Robinson .516 with two home runs, Ethan Hines .500 with two home runs, Bransen Christopher .400 with three home runs, Evan Jackson .385 with two home runs, Alex Lackey .355, Trey Drewery .321 with a home run, Julian Bridges .316, Garrett Duke .304 with five home runs, and Alex Waters. 261. Waters collected three wins and one save on the mound. Christopher, Thompson and Jackson each hurled two wins, and Robinson had one win and two saves.
