August 12, 2004 The Kings Mountain Herald RELIGION Er Em The Kings Mountain Herald EE Students use rock music = '! Yast Men meeting at Peoples Baptist to tell people about Jesus BY ANDIE L. BRYMER Staff Writer Three Kings Mountain college stu- dents traveled over 10,000 miles this summer using rock music to tell peo- ple about Jesus. Justin Roper, Lane Wood and Brandon McSwain along with Brady Sweat of Raleigh traveled to Indiana, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Ontario, Canada. Known as “One Way,” the band members are quick to thank family, friends and church members at First Baptist for their prayers and financial support. “We couldn’t have done it without them,” Roper said. Roper and Wood formed the group four years ago. Sweat, 19, and McSwain, 22, replaced outgoing mem- bers in February. The group say they felt God leading them to sing full time this summer. “We've never thrown ourselves out there before,” Roper said. When they return to Appalachian State University this fall, they’ll fly out for weekend concerts. Roper and Wood also help lead praise and worship on Thursday nights for Campus Crusade for Christ. Wood, vocalist and rhythm guitarist, writes most of the songs. “Our lyrics are glorifying to God. We tell others about our relationship to Christ,” Roper said. The band members say they begin concerts “rocking out” then the tempo slows. Wood narrates a video about a near fatal car crash he had last year. Doctors were doubtful he would live but instead he was out of the hospital in three days. “That’s what I share, God’s still a miracle worker,” Wood said. Band members give their testimony and invite the audience to accept Jesus. This year’s tour saw 50 people make decisions for Christ. On March 3, the one year anniver- sary of the accident, Wood penned a song about it. This summer he shared his story on the 700 Club and a similar national show in Canada. During the summer tour, One Way iS SS 1 FOOD INSPECTIONS played with Mercy Me, Point of Grace, Relient K and Tait of DC Talk. The group plays churches, Christian festivals and Christian and secular clubs. They've also released their first CD, Embrace. It’s available at Go Fish in Shelby and Joyful Noise in Gastonia. The band often shares venues with other Christian bands who play punk, country, contemporary and southern gospel. Members sometimes adapt their style when they encounter an older audience. However, most fans are middle school through young adult, male and female. Members are quick to point out they're not a “boy band,” like N” Sync. Wood, 18, is majoring in sociology and Roper, 19, secondary education. Roper hopes the band will have an opportunity to tour the west though One Way is leaving the future to the Lord. “We're praying for God's direction,” Wood said.
