‘HAROLD GILSTAD
PORT ANGELES, WA - Harold A. “Gil” Gilstad died
peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of October 9,
2004,in Port Angeles, Washington. He was 91.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur M.

Gil and Mary began their life together in the spring of
1935 near Blackduck, Minnesota. They logged and farmed
in the area of Gilstad Lake until just before the outbreak of
WW II when they moved to Duluth, Minnesota.
During the war Gil worked in defense-related jobs with
Diamond Caulk Company and Oliver Iron Mining
Company, both of Duluth. Following the war, the family
moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Gil worked for Allis
Chalmers Company as a draftsman/designer for ten years.
The family then moved to Kings Mountain, North Carolina
where Gil worked in engineering design for Lithium
Corporation of America in Bessemer City, North Carolina
until his retirement in 1978.
Following his retirement, Gil and Mary traveled exten-
sively visiting their children. Destinations included both
U.S. coasts, Alaska, the Caribbean, Japan, and England.
They have spent the past seventeen years in Port Angeles,

A particularly meaningful moment of Gil’s life was his

according to the high ideals expressed by this award. In her
90th year, after 69 years of marriage, Mary still refers to him
as “my Eagle Scout.” Gil’s passing is a keen loss to those

DOGS
From 1A
euthanize a dog which
appears dangerous. Moser
says the organization has a
moral obligation to place
safe dogs with families.
Not just anyone can adopt
from Mid-Atlantic. In addi-
tion to the indoor living and
fence requirement, potential
adopters must give veteri-
narian and personal refer-
ence, undergo a home visit
and sign a contract to never
sell or giveaway the dog.
The application asks for cost
estimates on feeding and
care. Moser says this lets
Mid-Atlantic know how
much research the would-be
owner has done. There is a
$300 adoption fee.
“We intend for the dogs
to be cared for.”
Moser has seized dogs
‘when owners didn’t follow
the contract.
Before Danes are adopted
out, they get all needed
medical care. In one case
this included costly hip
replacement surgery.
Despite all the good work,
Mid-Atlantic has been criti-
cized for only working with
Danes and Dane mixes
which look like Danes.
“I have to do what I can
do without my heartbreak-
ing. My heart breaks any-
way. I've carved out a
niche.”
Moser admits she has
probably burned out Gaston
County volunteers and satu-
rated adoptive homes there.
“TI would love to get more
people involved in this
area.”
Mid-Atlantic is already
working with the Cleveland
County Humane Society.
