Of his works, the one that has impressed me the most was published ] in 1938, and it hap- pens to be the one for which he is most known. This par- ticular Jeff Hensley novelis Meditation something mmm of an autobiographical sketch that describes a haunting search for meaning in life. George Webber, the protagonist of the story, published a highly success- ful novel, followed by a sec- ond but these did not bring him a sense of fulfillment. vm SR FooD INSPECTIONS When his search for meaning led him back to his hometown of Libya Hill, George discovered that things were not the same. The greed of the town lead- ers repulsed him. He then went to Germany. He had always felt a kinship with the German people, but in 1936 they were far different than he had remembered. So George returned to America, only to be disillu- sioned with the direction America was taking. His unfulfilled longing to redis- cover the stability and peace of his past led George to the home but the ones that matter the most to me have to do with the people I knew there. A number of those people have either moved away or died, so even though the skyline may be about the same it just isn’t the home I left behind. It may be true that a per- son can’t go home again in the physical sense, but I believe that Wolfe was wrong in one important ‘way, for we can go home again in a spiritual sense. One of my favorite Bible sto- ries describes how we can all go home again to our again home with his father. When the rebellious son wanted to leave, the father was flexible and let him go. While he was away from home, the father waited patiently. And when the son wanted to come home again, the father welcomed him with love and forgiveness. We call this story the para- ble of the “Prodigal Son,” but theologian Helmut Thielicke calls it the parable of the “Waiting Father” because the main character in the story is not really the wayward son, but the wait- ing father. From this story conclusion that “You Can't Creator, to a God who loves we all learn that God loves Go Home Again,” which us like a father loves his us with an unchanging and was the phrase Wolfe chose ~~ own son. unconditional love. So Wolfe for the title of his book. There were three charac- was wrong in a sense, I have been away from my hometown now for over twenty years, so I can understand why Wolfe said, “You can’t go home again.” There have been many changes in my hometown, ters in this familiar Bible because we can go home story.
