Roberson. Roberson earned the top seed in the west by complet- NCHSAA 3AA PLAYOFFS KM at undefeated T.C. Roberson in first round game ing its first-ever undefeated regular season. The Rams won the Mountain Athletic Conference with a 8-0 record and finished 10-0 overall. The Mountaineers finished fifth in the Southwestern Foothills with a 2-4 mark, and they will carry a 4-7 overall record into the play- offs. The winner of Friday's game will advance to the second round against the winner of the East Gaston at Hickory game. Kings Mountain has its work cut out Friday as T.C. Roberson features an offense which is quick, fast and averaging 36 points per game and a defense which is big and quick and is giving up less than seven points a game. “Theyre a very good foot- Friday night ball team,” says KM Coach a . i Dave Farquharson. “They've got some speed in the skill positions that they haven't had in the past. They've got good size. They're having a good run this year. This is the first time in school histo- ry that they've been unde- feated and it’s the first time that they've had an outright conference championship. Mounties fall to Maiden 36-7 By GARY STEWART Editor of The Herald Maiden scored two touchdowns in a one minute span of the first quarter to take a 16-0 lead and rolled to a 36-6 vic- tory over Kings Mountain's Mountaineers in the final regu- lar season football game Friday night at Maidens Thomas Brown Stadium. The victory closed out a perfect regular season for the 1A Blue Devils, who take an 11-0 record into a home playoff game Friday night against South Stokes. The Mountaineers, who fell to 4-7 overall after finishing fifth in the Southwestern Foothills Conference with a 2-4 mark, travel to Skyland Friday to battle unbeaten T.C. Roberson (10-0) in the first round of the 3AA playoffs. Kings Mountain appeared to be driving toward a possible score following the opening kickoff, picking up two of their five first downs on the night to move into Blue Devil terri- tory. But in a shotgun formation on a fourth and four call, KM quarterback Brandon McClain dropped the ball and Maiden linebacker Alex Wilson picked it up and rambled to the KM 12 yard line. Quarterback Brandon Finger immedi- ately hit wide receiver Travis Osbourne for a 12-yard touchdown pass, and hit Osbourne again with a two-point conversion pass to put Maiden on top 8-0 with 7:26 to play in the first quarter. After the ensuing kickoff, Maiden’s Vantrel England inter- cepted a McClain pass and returned it 45 yards for a touch- down, and Tommy Henry ran a two-point conversion to make it 16-0 with 6:22 remaining. From there, the game was all Maiden. The Blue Devils finished with 318 yards of total offense. Henry, a quick-foot- ed sophomore tailback, gained 145 yards in 20 carries to go over 1,600 yards rushing for the year. Finger hit 7-of-18 passes for 106 yards. The Mountaineers managed only 157 yards against a quick Maiden defense. The Blue Devils held KM’s leading rusher John Gwinn to 62 yards in 15 carries as the Mounties See Maiden, 2B #RL1894PK H1405D1 Free NOVEMBER 1859 E.
