New law prevents felons from possessing firearms BY ANDIE L. BRYMER Staff Writer A law which had allowed felons to keep firearms in their homes and businesses will change December 1. The new law makes it ille- gal for any felon to possess any firearm or components which could readily be con- verted to fire a projectile or muffle the sound of a firearm. Possession would be considered a Class G felony. The law applies to any felon regardless of when convicted. “We hope this takes some guns off the street,” Cleveland County Sheriff Raymond Hamrick said Monday. Hamrick'’s office issued a press release Thursday about the new law. “Lack of knowledge of this law will be no excuse, so we want the public to take heed to this notice now, in advance of the effective date, to prevent them being charged with this felony,” Hamrick wrote. The new law brings North Carolina into compliance with federal firearms rules. Kings Mountain Police Chief Melvin Proctor says the new law clears up con- fusion over gun ownership. No numbers were avail- able on how many felons live in Cleveland County. Officers check the criminal record of suspects to deter- mine if they are felons, according to Hamrick. Under the law, a firearm is defined as “any weapon, including a starter pistol, which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or its frame or receiver.” Felons wishing to get rid of a firearm may give it to any law enforcement agency. The weapon will be destroyed.
