School’s Spanish III students
provided the community a
language immersion experi-
ence Monday night.
Band members helped out
with Richie Valens’ “La
Bamba,” “Sketches of Spain”
and “Malaguena.” Students
danced the merengue and
sang in Spanish “El Cielito
Lindo” and “Malaguena
Salerosa.”
Four skits, “Por
Supuesto,” “En el Baile,”
“En Casa Del Dentista” and
“En Clase,” were presented
in both Spanish and English.
The poem “Sensemaya” was
recited in Spanish.
During the intermission
students sold foods and
handicrafts representative of
Spanish speaking countries.
According to teacher
Susan Canipe, the students
in her two Spanish III class-
es are there because of a
genuine interest in the lan-
guage. Only two years of
foreign language are
required for college admis-
sion.
Students are able to con-
verse in Spanish at a moder-
ate level after completing
the course, according to
Canipe. Many of her
advanced students plan to
use the language later, some
in teaching, business and
healthcare.
