Don’t Delay, Call Today! After narrow losses to Shelby and Hunter Huss to open the season, Kings Mountains Mountaineers stunned one of the top ranked South Carolina teams 56-54 Monday night at the KM gym. The Clover Blue Eagles came to town with a 3-0 record and ranked #3 in the South Carolina 3A poll and #7 in the Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll. Featuring 6-10 center Tyrone McNeil, the Blue » Eagles used their height and inside strength to build a 10- point lead in the first half but the Mountaineers used their full-court press to rég- ister two quick steals that resulted in baskets which trimmed the difference to 29-24 at halftime. The Mountaineers then came out and played what Coach Danny McDowell termed “our best second half all year.” David McClish led the KM offense with a game- high 17 points. Point guard Darik Gary added 15 points and Antonio Feaster 10. McClish also gathered a team-high seven rebounds and D.J. Byrd added five. Gary had five assists and six steals, including the two at the close of the first half. “You're only as good as your seniors,” remarked McDowell, “and Darik Gary played another outstanding floor game. He ran the offense, made several steals, ignited us on the fast break and on two of those fast breaks the kid goes down GARY STEWART / HERALD Mounties upset Clover and jams it. You don’t expect a point guard to do that, but it gets the house in an uproar and makes it tough (on Clover) the rest of the way.” A Kings Mountain shot 44 percent from the field and 69 percent from the foul line. McNeil led Clover with 16 points. “They came in highly touted,” McDowell said. “It’s always a plus to beat a ranked team early in the season. That's why I like to play a tough non-conference “schedule.” v McDowell said he was pleased with the play of his reserves. Feaster and Byrd both came off the bench to play good all-around games, as did freshman point guard Xavier Whitenburg. “Our little freshman came in and ignited us a couple of times,” McDowell noted. “He sees the floor real well as a freshman. He got a cou- ple nice assists. He didn’t score any points but he does a heck of a job with those kind of things that go unno- ticed. Sometimes I'll bring him in at the point and send Darik Gary over to the two guard. That's a potent com- bination.” HM Kings Mountain's girls lost their third straight game in the opener, 59-12. The tal- ented Clover ladies built a 17-3 first quarter lead and "25-7 halftime advantage. Kristen Feemster and Natiera Hinton scored 14 points each for Clover. Chaquita Sims scored six for Kings Mountain. GARY STEWART / HERALD Kings Mountain's Darik Gary, left, does such an excellent job with the full-court press that a Mountaineer fan is call- ing for a five-second violation against Clover in Monday's game at KMHS.
