draws big crowd

GROVER - Crowds lined Main
Street late Saturday morning. Some
perched on the backs of pick-up
tailgates. Others sat on car hoods.
Many had empty bags ready to
stash the candy thrown from floats.
Tinsel candy canes, bells and can-
dles hung from the street lights.
Red and white silk poinsettias dec-
orated the sidewalk flower boxes.
Under a cloudless, Carolina blue
sky, few wore winter coats. From
babies in strollers to senior citizens,
the crowd waited. With the wailing
¢ of a siren, kKidsjumped-up.and
down.
“Here they come,” one shouted.
“Guys look,” yelled another excited
spectator.

Grand marshall Bill McCarter led
the parade. Elected officials includ-
ing mayors of Grover and
Blacksburg, S.C. and Cleveland
County Commissioners and Sheriff
waved to the crowds.
Kings Mountain High School's
marching band played.
Fire and rescue vehicles from
Grover, Bethlehem and Antioch
blasted their sirens. .
Church youth groups, a contin-
gent of four wheelers, business rep-
resentatives, a clown, members of
the Grover Lions and Women's
clubs and the Mecca Temple Salem
Grand Shrine in Bessemer City
tossed candy. Kids scrambled to
pick up the peppermint disc, red
hots and if lucky, the occasional
tootsie roll.
