EDUCATION The Kings Mountain Herald January 20, 2005 KM students enjoy music of Timmy Abell BY ANDIE L. BRYMER Staff Writer Asheville performer Timmy Abell visit- ed Kings Mountain Thursday to the delight of third graders. Students were bused to Kings Mountain High School to hear Abell play the banjo, hammered dulcimer bowed psaltery and more. Abell told his audience that the _ psaltery was an easy instrument to play, then invited student Douglas Edgerton up on stage for a demonstration. . Abell then brought out Raggedy Man, a wooden, doll-like percussion instru- ment.-He made the wooden man perform buck, square and break dances and the moon walk. : Morgan Patrick was invited on stage to play the instrument as Abell led the group in a seated square dance. He had the children clapping their hands, snap- ping their fingers, clicking their tongues and tapping their feet. Putting down instruments, Abell told the folk story of the little girl who cried diamonds. Initially the tears were a bless- ing. However, the girl was kidnapped by a greedy man who sold the stones. In the end, a clown rescued her. She laughed till she cried real salt and water tears. The girl never cried diamonds again. Abell was brought to the county by a partnership between the Cleveland County Arts Council and the Cleveland County Schools. To learn more about Abell, visit timmyabell.com.
