SS The Kings Mountain Herald January 27, 2005 Mounties let one get away against C-Day Like the fisherman that came home with a boat full of fish but couldn’t land the big one, Kings Mountain's Mountaineers let one get away in their non-confer- ence game with Charlotte Country Day Wednesday night at Donald L. Parker Gymnasium. The Mountaineers led most of the game, but Country Day took advan- tage of some fourth quarter injuries and missed oppor- tunities by the home team to post a 71-68 victory. The Mountaineers, who lost their second straight game, also lost two of their players off an already-thin roster. Darrick Marable seri- ously injured his arm and will probably miss the rest of the season, and Brandon McClain suffered a concus- sion and had to leave the game. “We were already in foul trouble and that just threw us for a loop,” noted KM Coach Danny McDowell. “We basically played the rest of the game with five players and let them back into the game.” After a 20-20 first quarter tie, the Mountaineers built a 42-32 halftime lead and 61- 51 lead going into the fourth period. But Country Day’ s Ryan Daly, who finished with 39 points, shot the lights out in the fourth quarter. Antonio Feaster scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and David McClish added 11 points for the Mountaineers. McClish and D.J. Byrd each grabbed seven rebounds and Darik Gary and Xavier Whittenburg had six and three assists, respectively. Joel Guyton came off the bench to play a good all- around game. Except for the final score, Kings Mountain had a good night overall, hitting 47 per- cent of its field goal attempts and 63 percent from the foul line. “We just didn’t have enough leadership to hold on after the game got tight,” McDowell said. “The kids played hard. It wasn’t a lack of effort. We just made some mental mistakes down the stretch and you can’t do that against a good team. “We don’t have the luxury of taking a night off,” he added. “We have to click on all cylinders every single time. We don’t have a super- star that we can ride his back. We have to do it by committee.” ~ M In girls action, Country Day built a 31-12 halftime | lead and rolled to a 53-35, ol victory.
