Page 12 Baseball Fever March 9 & 10, 2005 Players that made the big time BY JIM HEFFNER Staff Writer When Ted Abernathy died recently, the area lost one of its most famous professional baseball players. Abernathy, who died late last year, was born in Stanley and lived much of his young life in Dallas. He went to the major leagues in 1955 with the old Washington Senators. He was first used as a starter because of his good overhand fast ball, but, after an arm injury, Abernathy started throwing underhand, sometimes actually drag- ging his knuckles along the ground. The style change made him one of the most effective pitchers in the majors. He was the first “Fireman of the Year,” and won the award twice before he retired. Abernathy retired in 1972 after spending time with Washington, Cleveland, the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati, St. Louis and Kansas City. Oddly, there have been just three major league baseball players named See Players, Page 13 Left to right, area baseball players who have made the big time: Ralph Roberts, Chris s Mion.
