RAIDERS
‘From Page 4
they're not on the mound,
Bumgardner qr Stancil will
hold down third base.
An all-conference left fielder
returns for the Big Red in
Andrew Rinehart, who recent-
ly signed to play football at
Army. Rinehart led the Raiders
in home runs last spring with
five and was a solid .300-plus
hitter.
The speedy McCarter has a
lock on center field. But also
listed there are Hill and Zack
Watkins. Watkins is up from
the junior varsity.
Senior Donnie McCaskill,
who also has a strong arm,
holds forth in right field.
Senior Jordan Anderson and
sophomore Marcus
Duckworth are also listed
there.
The Raiders lost center field-
er Matt Lanier, second base-
man Wade Harris and third
baseman-pitcher Mitch Harris
to graduation. Mitch Harris
received a baseball scholarship
to the Naval Academy and
he’s in line to play first base
for the Middies as a freshman.
The Raiders won the Big
South title the first year, then
Ashbrook the next two years.
Lineberger looks for several
teams, including his Raiders,
Ashbrook, East Gaston, East
Lincoln, and North Gaston to
be in the thick of things.
~ This is the last year of the
Big South as it has been over
the past four years. Next year
Crest joins the fold and Berry
Academy and East Lincoln
will drop out.
“We had a good summer of
baseball in the summer
leagues,” Lineberger said.
“That, along with our weight
program, are big pluses for our
baseball program.”
Lineberger’s son, Jason,
coached the older Raiders in
summer baseball and his
father coached the younger
Raiders. “We lost a great play-
er, Wes Carroll, who moved
with his family to Florida prior
to his sophomore year,” said
the Red Raider coach.
The two Linebergers and
Robin Ratchford coach the var-
sity, while Brian Andrews and
Phil Cherry work with the jun-
ior varsity.
