Rinehart led the Raiders in home runs last spring with five and was a solid .300-plus hitter. The speedy McCarter has a lock on center field. But also listed there are Hill and Zack Watkins. Watkins is up from the junior varsity. Senior Donnie McCaskill, who also has a strong arm, holds forth in right field. Senior Jordan Anderson and sophomore Marcus Duckworth are also listed there. The Raiders lost center field- er Matt Lanier, second base- man Wade Harris and third baseman-pitcher Mitch Harris to graduation. Mitch Harris received a baseball scholarship to the Naval Academy and he’s in line to play first base for the Middies as a freshman. The Raiders won the Big South title the first year, then Ashbrook the next two years. Lineberger looks for several teams, including his Raiders, Ashbrook, East Gaston, East Lincoln, and North Gaston to be in the thick of things. ~ This is the last year of the Big South as it has been over the past four years. Next year Crest joins the fold and Berry Academy and East Lincoln will drop out. “We had a good summer of baseball in the summer leagues,” Lineberger said. “That, along with our weight program, are big pluses for our baseball program.” Lineberger’s son, Jason, coached the older Raiders in summer baseball and his father coached the younger Raiders. “We lost a great play- er, Wes Carroll, who moved with his family to Florida prior to his sophomore year,” said the Red Raider coach. The two Linebergers and Robin Ratchford coach the var- sity, while Brian Andrews and Phil Cherry work with the jun- ior varsity. South Point's first Big South game comes March 15 at East - Gaston and is the first night game (7 p.m.) of the season.. This year’s Easter Tournament comes March 28-April 2 at East Gaston's Choctaw Field.
