Bridges thought differently, vowing if she lost there would not be a second attempt. During her 12 years she served two four-year-terms and two two-year-terms. In 2001 she made an unsuccessful bid for mayor against Rick Murphrey. “I thought it was time for a woman,” she said. Bridges is confident Kings Mountain will eventually have a female mayor. The city made a major change during Bridges’ time in office, hiring its first man- ager. “We burned the midnight oil selecting one,” she said. Serving on the council was time consuming, but Bridges says that never diminished her enjoyment of the job. “I love to be around peo- ple,” she said. Bridges hopes others will follow her civic example. “I would love to see younger people get interest- ed in politics and run,” she said. Bridges has shared her gift for leadership with civic organizations as well. She was president of the American Legion Auxiliary and heads up the AARP.
